The Fragmentation of Porn Shows How The Rest of Video Will Go

in LeoFinance5 months ago

When it comes to technology, pornography is one of the leading indicators. Throughout its history, it has always been cutting edge when it comes to new innovations.

Of course, as the Internet took off, porn was one of the early adopters. The conversion from physical-to-digital was a foreshadowing of where things were going.

Here is where we can see the lessons of the Internet clear as day. One of the things we know the Internet creates is abundance. When it comes to video, porn or otherwise, we see an abundance. Even just consider the amount of video uploaded each day to YouTube is astounding.

As we noted in the past, this is only going to increase.

Another thing that is going to happen is fragmentation. Here is something that catches most off guard.

Fragmentation of all Video

Porn might be a leader but it is not the only kind of video that is affected. In fact, we can look at the adult world are an indication of what is going to unfold with all video content.

To understand this, we need to look at what already happened.

The book A Thousand Wicked Thoughts was written in 2012. In it some numbers were cited:

In 1991, there were fewer than 90 adult magazines in the US. By 1997, there were 900 pornography sites. As of the writing of the book (2012), CYBERsitter blocked 2.5 million adult websites.

We can only imagine what that number is 12 years later.

This is an example of fragmentation. Of course, some might point out that many of the major sites are now under a couple corporate parents. This is true. However, when you look at millions of sites, this is fragmentation on an epic scale.

We also cam point out there are now sites like OnlyFans, something that wasn't even around in 2012.

Here is the insight into where video is heading. This is, naturally, not good news for YouTube. The idea that more content is going to be included on other sites is something that is tough for that company to stomach. Even TikTok has done a number on the video leader.

This is not to say that YouTube is going to go under. What we are simply pointing out is the fact others are vying for attention and some are having success. Rumble is another video platform that is making headway.

Web 3.0 Video

So far, we are discussing more of the same. Whether it is YouTube, Rumble, or TikTok, we are discussing centralized entities that are owned by corporate entities. There are other options but they are much smaller.

That said, Web 3.0 can be a major turning point. Again, even if nothing rivals YouTube in side, we could end up seeing million of platforms that host video content. Like the porn industry, not all will be enormous sites.

Smaller sites might not have the major traffic but the power is in the totality.

I have shown this chart on a number of occasions. All video is going to fall under the Power Law distribution curve.

YouTube and TikTok might always reside on the left hand side. However, millions of other sites hosting and showing video content is going to fill up the right hand side. Some of these platforms will see growing numbers, something that is going to pull attention.

This is a game of eyeballs. Hence, anytime that one spends watching a video on a platform outside of YouTube alters the equation somewhat.

Multiply this millions of times and you start to see a difference.

Web 3.0 has the potential to incorporate video into many of its platforms. Web 2.0 was designed in a different era. While there was advancement over the past 15 years, we see how some of these platforms still operate within their moats.

To put it in context, the online porn industry went from 900 sites to 2.5 million in 15 years. I didnt work out the growth rate but that is significant.

If social video does the same thing, we can be looking at a run over the next decade of hundreds of thousands of sites offering video. With that many, eyeballs are gong to naturally be pulled in.

The fragmentation of video is going to occur. One net result will be an even greater abundance of video content.

Ultimate, this is what the Internet does, it creates abundance.

Hive Power Up Day - July 1st 2024

The porn industry's early adoption of digital platforms serves as a precursor to a wider proliferation of content among platforms. I would say this is not a challenge to YouTube but does signal a more democratized video landscape, and platforms such as OnlyFans and Rumble underscore this shift.

That is why if kids is having access to the net then they should be somekind of guadians parental control wont actually do the trick these days. We got prote t the young ones
