I guess it's because of the multiple AI movies that portray AI as bad that caused a lot of the fears. Matrix, Terminator, and I Robot are some of the popular ones. There are good depictions of AI in movies like Wall-E, Iron Man's Vision, and I Robot. We just need to make sure that we avoid the development of bad AI.
