Can't say I'm surprised. I expected there to be a big cost to the high end software that they will release. I wasn't expecting them to provide everyone with a cheap way to create Hollywood level movies with AI. This isn't a new practice as well. We have Adobe Photoshop that can cost a lot compared to the open source Gimp, or the Adobe Premier Pro versus the Blender open source. It is just a matter of whether the open source option is good or not.
