My company loves to emphasize that no single individual is above the organisation and sometimes go through great lengths to prove this. They once laid off an entire team for a 'tiny' infraction despite exceeding their performance expectations. The message was clear and some of us felt it was deliberate to reiterate their philosophy.
There really is nothing wrong with this on the surface. Knowing fully well that the organisation wouldn't bend any of its rules for anybody should be a commendable act. The only problem is that when 'force' is used excessively it becomes an unnecessary spectacle, and calls into question things like intention in the first place.
Far too often it appears the rules has its own exemptions. There are some employees circle jerking around headquarters that don't seem like they are affected by this rule. Of course I am merely speculating, but am not alone. Perception is very important, and if equality of consequence is what they are trying to sell, then it is only appropriate that we make known our observations that go contrary to that trend.
From a personal standpoint knowing that I can be disposed off at any given time has only made me more resolute to figuring out my future as fast as possible. I certainly won't be disposed off and will move my value elsewhere if need be.
