Hello friends, regarding the recent announcement of the imminent canonization of Doctor José Gregorio Hernández, I wanted to see some cinematographic works that have been made in his honor here in my country (Venezuela) which is also the country of origin of the future saint, and that is how I came across El Venerable, a film by Leonardo Padrón) and starring Flavio Caballero, it was filmed in 1990, but I believe that today more than ever it will be relevant.
Hola amigos, a propósito del reciente anuncio de la pronta canonización del Doctor José Gregorio Hernández, quise ver algunos trabajos cinematográficos que se han hecho en su honor aquí en mi país Venezuela) que también es el país de procedencia del futuro santo, y fue así como me encontré con El Venerable, un film de Leonardo Padrón) y protagonizada por Flavio Caballero, fue filmada en 1990, pero creo que hoy más que nunca tendrá vigencia.
The film is about the life and work of Dr. José José Gregorio, but it does not focus solely on him, but is told through a kind of narrator who guides another character through the facts he knows about the illustrious doctor, so the film moves between the past, through flashbacks and "the present", however, despite the constant time jumps the film is not confusing at all, the times are very well marked.
la película trata sobre la vida y obra del doctor José José Gregorio, pero no se centra únicamente en él, sino está contada a través de una especie de narrador quien va guiando a otro personaje a través de los hechos que conoce acerca del ilustre médico, así que la película se maneja entre el pasado, a través de flashbacks y “el presente”, sin embargo, a pesar de que constantemente hay esos saltos temporales, la película no resulta confusa en lo absoluto, los tiempos están muy bien marcados.
The performances are magnificent, and of course, with such great stars of Venezuelan television as Carlos Villamizar, Lourdes Valera, Gledys Ibarra, and Flavio Caballero, especially the latter, he had a hint of humility and kindness in his gaze. He also walked the way the real-life character is said to have walked, with his hands behind his back. His tone of voice was also gentle and pleasant, conveying an air of authentic kindness.
Las actuaciones son magnificas y cómo no, si hay grandes estrellas de la televisión venezolana, como lo eran Carlos Villamizar, Lourdes Valera, Gledys Ibarra y Flavio Caballero, sobre todo este último, a él se le notaba un dejo de humildad. y bondad en la mirada, además caminaba como se cuenta que caminaba el personaje de la vida real, con las manos detrás de la espalda, su tono de voz también era apacible y agradable, transmitía un aire de bondad autentico.
I loved the setting, they did a great job in that sense too, they managed to recreate a Caracas of the early 20th century, with the cars of the time, those that you had to wind with a lever to get them to work, the houses that were still colonial, the first telephones, in short, it really looks very good.
Me encantó la ambientación, hicieron un gran trabajo también en ese sentido, lograron recrear una Caracas de principios del siglo XX, con los autos de la época, esos a los que tenías que darle cuerda con una palanca para que pudieran funcionar, las casas que aún seguían siendo coloniales, los primeros teléfonos, en fin, de verdad que se ve muy bien.
The story is beautiful and told at a very good pace. It takes us through all the important moments in the doctor's life and explains them clearly and concisely, as people began to consider him a saint shortly after his death. Many questioned his miracles, but the truth is that there is abundant scientific evidence confirming the veracity and authenticity of these miracles. It's clear that this is a film made with great respect and love, highlighting the idiosyncrasies of a people of faith.
La historia es preciosa y está contada a un muy buen ritmo, nos pasea por todos los momentos importantes en la vida del médico y los explica de manera clara y concisa porque las personas comenzaron a considerarlo un santo desde poco después de su muerte. Muchos cuestionaron sus milagros, pero la verdad es que hay muchos respaldos científicos que confirman la veracidad y autenticidad de dichos milagros. Se nota que es un film hecho con mucho respeto y amor, resaltando la idiosincrasia de un pueblo de fe.
The only thing I would have to criticize is the main character's death scene, since whatever they used to simulate the blood looked very artificial. I don't know if it looked great at the time the film was released, but honestly, it doesn't look good today.
Lo único que sí tendría que criticar obligatoriamente es la escena de la muerte del personaje principal, ya que lo que sea que usaron para simular la sangre se veía muy artificial, no sé si en esa época en la que se estrenó la película se veía genial, pero honestamente hoy en día no se ve bien.
I think that with all this commotion that has been raised by Pope Francis' announcement about the imminent canonization of Saint José Gregorio Hernández, they should take advantage of it to remaster this material because I think it would really be worth it, or maybe do a remake directly, since a story as beautiful as this one deserves a refresh.
Creo que con todo este revuelo que ha levantado el anuncio de papa Francisco acerca de la pronta canonización de San José Gregorio Hernández, deberían aprovechar para hacer una remasterización de este material porque creo que realmente valdría muchísimo la pena, o tal vez hacer directamente un remake, ya que una historia tan bonita como esta merece un refrescamiento
