Hello, film and cinema lovers!
I hope you are all well. Today I’m here to talk to you about a new film released on Netflix, directed by Guillermo del Toro. It is a melancholic, desolate, gothic and tragic reinterpretation or remake of Mary Shelley’s classic, where the story leads to a tragedy of loneliness, arrogance and misunderstanding, where all the terror was for love.
The story is constructed as a tragedy in the classic Gothic and Baroque style. Moving away from the original work and other films about Frankenstein, Del Toro renews the story to show the arrogance of man as a creator and the purity of the creature, but also the incomprehensibility of the very person who created it. It explores the creature’s fear and existential loneliness, cruelly abandoned by the one who made it and understood only by the few who understand the beauty of the soul, but who are strangers in a world full of hatred and ignorance.
The story is told through acts, beginning with the prelude, which explores Victor Frankenstein’s childhood, marked by his Oedipus complex with his mother and the mutual rejection between him and his father. His mother’s death triggers Victor’s obsession with eternal life and his subsequent obsession with Elisabeth, who resembles his mother.
Victor grows up and becomes a doctor like his father, but he challenges natural limits and creates the creature with the idea of transcending death. Victor is arrogant, obsessive, and considers himself a victim; his ambition is Promethean, although he does not really understand what he is doing, and when he creates the creature, he does not give it what parents, or in this case, creators give to their own creations: love.
And then we have Elizabeth, who described a butterfly as “distant, utterly captivating, but a stranger in this world,” which is a true description of herself. Elizabeth is pure and tender. She sees all life as beautiful. She sees the creature as a pure spirit, a miracle of God, innocent and untainted, but her understanding of the creature makes Victor jealous and hateful of his creation. Elisabeth’s rejection of Victor makes him want to destroy the creature.
Finally, we have the creature, a new life, who does not understand the world because no one teaches him. Victor becomes everything to him, but he soon realises that he is nothing to his creator. The creature only wants love and a place to belong, but when he is exposed to the world and its horrors, he knows only violence and rejection. Human indifference and hatred only unleash his anger, especially since the few people who truly understand him seem only to meet a tragic end.
Thus, there are three sides: Victor, incapable of loving the one he created; the creature, the rejected son; and Elisabeth, a stranger in the world. They are all part of a tragic story, and the climax seems to be only the confrontation between Victor and his son.
Something I really liked is that the film is full of artistic references, such as Hamlet, Vanitas, and Michelangelo, among others. You can see that a lot of effort went into the production of the film, especially in the sets, the aesthetics of the scenes, the make-up of Jacob Elordi (the creature) and the costumes, especially Elisabeth’s, which I personally loved.
This is a melancholic story; it is closer to an existential tragedy than classic horror, so it explores the beauty and sensitivity of the creature rather than the more terrifying version. Unlike the original book, the creature is more emotional and has a stormy relationship with his father. The creature is more of a suffering being than an intellectual one; here Del Toro does not adapt the novel literally, but takes it in another narrative direction, focusing on denied affection.

Hoy les vengo a hablar de una nueva película que estrenaron en Netflix dirigida por Guillermo del Toro, siendo una reinterpretación o nueva versión melancólica, desolada, gótica y trágica, pero visualmente deslumbrante, del clásico de Mary Shelley, donde la historia se dirige hacia una tragedia, de soledad, arrogancia e incomprensión, donde todo el terror fue por amor.
La historia se construye como una tragedia al clásico estilo gótico y barroco. Y alejándose de la obra original y de otras películas referentes a Frankenstein en el cine, Del Toro renueva la historia para mostrar la arrogancia del hombre como ente creador y la pureza de la criatura pero incomprensibilidad por la misma persona que la creó. Explorando el miedo y la soledad existencial de la criatura, abandonado cruelmente por quien lo hizo y solo entendido por los pocos que entienden la belleza del alma, pero que son extraños en un mundo lleno de odio e ignorancia.
La historia se cuenta por medio de actos, empezando por el preludio dónde se explora la niñez de Víctor Frankenstein, marcada por su complejo de Edipo con su madre y el rechazo mutuo entre el y su padre. Dónde la muerte de su madre desencadena la obsesión de Víctor por la vida eterna y sus posterior obsesión con Elisabeth quien se parece a su madre.
Víctor crece y se convierte en médico como su padre, pero desafía los límites naturales y crea a la criatura con la idea de trascender la muerte. Víctor es arrogante, obsesivo, considerado solo por él mismo como una víctima; su ambición es prometeica, aunque realmente no entiende lo que hace y, cuando crea la criatura, no le brinda lo que los padres o, en este caso, creador le brinda a su propia creación: amor.
Y luego tenemos a Elisabeth, quien describió a una mariposa como “distante, totalmente cautivadora, pero una extraña en este mundo”, siendo esta una verdadera descripción de si misma. Elisabeth es pura y tierna. Ella ve toda vida como hermosa. Ella ve a la criatura como un espíritu puro, un milagro de Dios, inocente e impoluto, pero el entendimiento que ella tiene por la criatura genera en Víctor celos y odio a su creación. El rechazo de Elisabeth hacia Víctor hace que busque acabar con la criatura.
Finalmente, tenemos a la criatura, una vida nueva, que no comprende el mundo porque nadie se lo enseña. Víctor se vuelve todo para él, pero pronto se da cuenta de que para su creador él no es nada. La criatura solo quiere amor y un lugar al que pertenecer, pero cuando se encuentra expuesta al mundo y sus horrores, conoce solo violencia y rechazo. La indiferencia y el odio humano solo desatan su ira, sobre todo porque las pocas personas que lo entienden de verdad parecen solo encontrar un final trágico.
Teniendo así tres lados: Víctor, incapaz de amar a quien él creó, la criatura, el hijo rechazado y Elisabeth, una extraña en el mundo. Todos son una historia trágica y el clímax parece solo ser el enfrentamiento entre Víctor y su hijo.
Algo que me gustó mucho es que la película está llena de referencias artísticas, como Hamlet, Vanitas y Miguel Ángel, entre otros. En la producción de la obra se ve que hubo mucho esfuerzo, sobre todo en los escenarios, la estética de las escenas, el maquillaje de Jacob Elordi (la criatura) y el vestuario, sobre todo el de Elisabeth, que en lo personal me encantó.
Esta es una historia melancólica; se acerca más a una tragedia existencial que al horror clásico, por lo que se explora más la belleza y sensibilidad de la criatura que la versión más terrorífica. A diferencia del libro original, la criatura es más emocional y con una relación tormentosa con su padre. La criatura es un ser más doliente que intelectual; aquí Del Toro no adapta la novela literalmente, sino que la pone en otra dirección narrativa, centrado en el afecto negado.
