Fellow travelers, today I want to share with you a very special experience in an iconic place on the beloved Margarita Island: the Iglesia del Valle, located in the picturesque Valle del Espíritu Santo, in the municipality of García in the state of Nueva Esparta. This site is not only a spiritual landmark, but also a place steeped in history, tradition, and devotion.
A few days ago, I had the pleasure of visiting this church with my mother, who deeply wanted to see it. The Virgin of the Valley, patron saint of eastern Venezuela and fishermen, is venerated with great fervor by thousands of people who come from different corners of the country to pay homage, ask for favors, or simply thank her for the miracles she has granted.
Upon arriving at Valle del Espíritu Santo, the first thing you see from afar is the church tower, which rises majestically among the houses and businesses of the area. To get there, we had to walk down a charming road lined with small shops offering all kinds of religious items and souvenirs allegorical to the Virgin. The curious and beautiful thing about this walk is that many of these merchants, as a sign of gratitude for the blessing they receive each morning from the priest, give small gifts to visitors. This tradition gives the place a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Amigos viajeros, hoy quiero compartirles una experiencia muy especial en un lugar emblemático de la querida Isla Margarita; la Iglesia del Valle, ubicada en el pintoresco Valle del Espíritu Santo, en el municipio García del estado Nueva Esparta. Este sitio no solo es un punto de referencia espiritual, sino también un rincón lleno de historia, tradición y devoción.
Hace algunos días tuve la dicha de visitar esta iglesia junto a mi madre, quien deseaba profundamente conocerla. La Virgen del Valle, patrona del Oriente venezolano y de los pescadores, es venerada con gran fervor por miles de personas que llegan desde distintos rincones del país para rendirle homenaje, pedir favores o simplemente agradecerle por los milagros concedidos.
Al llegar al Valle del Espíritu Santo, lo primero que se divisa desde lejos es la torre de la iglesia, que se alza majestuosa entre las casas y negocios del lugar. Para llegar hasta ella, tuvimos que atravesar un encantador camino lleno de pequeños comercios que ofrecen todo tipo de artículos religiosos y recuerdos alegóricos a la Virgen. Lo curioso y hermoso de este recorrido es que muchos de estos comerciantes, en señal de gratitud por la bendición que reciben cada mañana del sacerdote, regalan pequeños obsequios a los visitantes. Esta tradición le da un aire cálido y acogedor al lugar.
As we got closer, we were finally able to admire the church's façade, which has a charming Gothic architectural style, with rounded shapes and soft colors that convey peace. According to some locals, this church was originally much smaller. Over time, thanks to the devotion of the faithful, it was enlarged until, in 1995, it was granted the status of Minor Basilica by the Pope, making it an even more significant temple for the Catholic community.
Al acercarnos, finalmente pudimos admirar la fachada de la iglesia, que tiene un estilo arquitectónico gótico encantador, con formas redondeadas y colores suaves que transmiten paz. Según nos contaron algunos lugareños, esta iglesia fue originalmente mucho más pequeña. Con el paso del tiempo y gracias a la devoción de los fieles, se fue ampliando hasta que en el año 1995 recibió la categoría de Basílica Menor, otorgada por el Papa, lo que la convirtió en un templo aún más significativo para la comunidad católica.
Upon entering, the first thing that caught my attention were the colorful stained glass windows, which filter the sunlight, creating a magical and serene atmosphere.
Al entrar, lo primero que captó mi atención fueron sus vitrales de colores, que filtran la luz del sol creando un ambiente mágico y sereno.
We walk down the central aisle, flanked by sturdy wooden benches, until we reach the main altar, where the urn containing the image of the Virgin of the Valley is located. This urn, adorned with gold pieces and supported by four archangels, is truly impressive. Due to a theft that occurred years ago, this area is now heavily guarded. At certain times of the year, the image of the Virgin is placed at the bottom of the altar so that parishioners can get closer to it; then it is returned to its elevated place in the chapel.
Caminamos por el pasillo central, flanqueado por robustos bancos de madera, hasta llegar al altar principal, donde se encuentra la urna que guarda la imagen de la Virgen del Valle. Esta urna, adornada con piezas de oro y sostenida por cuatro arcángeles, es verdaderamente impresionante. Debido a un robo ocurrido años atrás, esta área está ahora muy protegida. En ciertas épocas del año, la imagen de la Virgen se coloca en la parte baja del altar para que los feligreses puedan acercarse más fácilmente a ella; luego, vuelve a su lugar elevado en la capilla.
Right in front of the main entrance is the chapel, where the image of the Virgin Mary was placed high up, behind the priest's oratory. My mother was amazed by the beauty and devotion that permeates every corner of the temple.
Justo frente a la entrada principal se encuentra la capilla, donde se colocaba la imagen de la Virgen en lo alto, detrás del oratorio del padre. Mi madre estaba maravillada por tanta belleza y devoción que se respira en cada rincón del templo.
On the outskirts is the vehicle that carries the Virgin around different parts of the island during her pilgrimage.
En las afueras se encuentra el vehículo que pasea a la virgen por distintos puntos de la isla cuando se realiza su peregrinación.
In order to enter the church, we had to wait in a short line due to the large number of worshippers and offerings.
Outside the church, next to the museum that displays the offerings (although it was closed on this occasion), there is an area for lighting candles, asking for favors, and paying promises. With great respect and faith, we lit a candle and asked for health for our entire family.
Para poder acceder a la iglesia tuvimos que hacer una pequeña cola por la cantidad de fieles y débitos.
En el exterior de la iglesia, al lado del museo que exhibe las ofrendas (aunque en esta ocasión estaba cerrado), se encuentra el área destinada a encender velas, pedir favores y pagar promesas. Nosotras, con mucho respeto y fe, encendimos una vela y pedimos salud para toda nuestra familia.
On the other side of the church, there are stalls selling refreshing drinks, including the traditional papelón con limón, which my mother enjoyed very much. It was the perfect end to a day full of spirituality and joy.
Visiting this church, with its two beautiful shades of light yellow and white, was an unforgettable experience for the whole family. I hope you enjoyed it and that I was able to convey a little of the magic of the place through my post.

Por otro costado de la iglesia hay puestos que venden bebidas refrescantes, entre ellas el tradicional papelón con limón, que mi madre disfrutó muchísimo. Fue el cierre perfecto para una jornada llena de espiritualidad y alegría.
