Visiting St. Agnes Church (Eng/Esp)

in Worldmappin5 days ago

We visited the church of Santa Inés, one of the most emblematic religious temples of the state of Sucre, even its parishioners are as numerous or more numerous than those who go to the Cathedral. This building is more than a century old and is located in the San Francisco sector, in the heart of the colonial part of the city.

As we approach, we can observe an imposing architecture that contains an invaluable historical and artistic richness. The front entrance is impressive due to the solar illumination that enters through its stained glass windows and gives a glimpse of the central altar and the two side altars. Also the lamps of the time complement the light that allows to appreciate the immense images attached to the walls and the rows of wooden benches. Once inside, it is impossible not to admire the ceiling, decorated in the best Byzantine art style.

Undoubtedly, this precinct radiates solemnity, as if time had stopped several decades ago to preserve the faith of our ancestors in a sacred place. History is breathed in every corner while the images of the Nazarene and the Holy Sepulcher invite us to reflect. This afternoon we were allowed access to several areas that are usually closed to the public, including the grotto of the virgin, located on one side of the church.

Also the church Santa Inés has several medical offices, a large internal courtyard and a meeting room. At the back of the altar there are several large images and the section where the priest prepares the masses. There you can also see the large plaque where the church was declared National Historical Heritage on August 2, 1960.

As an anecdote, while I was capturing the images, a big dog came into the church and wanted to play with little Alma, who, being sure, made us laugh by indicating, in her own way, that she was Little Red Riding Hood and the animal was the wolf that was chasing her.
