Today I want to take you with me to one of those places in Havana that, for me, embodies the essence of the city: its past, its vibrant present, and its entrepreneurial spirit.
I'm talking about the San José Market, a place that is much more than a cultural center; it's a sensory experience.
It's located on the beautiful and iconic Avenida del Puerto, right at the entrance to Old Havana. Before going inside, I pause to admire its imposing façade and iron structure, which harmonizes with the surrounding colonial architecture.
It's hard not to feel small in front of such a giant metal structure, built in 1849 using more than 3,000 tons of iron beams. Its original purpose was to store all the goods arriving from overseas and those destined for export, such as the sugar, coffee, and tobacco produced on the island.
Over time, it transformed. Today, it has been given a new life, not as a warehouse, but as a vast cultural space full of color, art, and people.
The first thing you feel upon entering is the vibrant energy that welcomes you, starting with the craft market—the heart of the place. It's a labyrinth of creativity where the city's best artisans gather.
We stroll through its aisles, filled with colors and textures: beautiful pieces of ceramics and wood, embroidered linen and cotton clothing, crocheted items, and unique jewelry made with seeds and metals.
There are also hundreds of paintings with different themes to choose from. It's the perfect place to find that special gift you've been looking for, and you know you'll be taking home a piece of Cuban talent.
There are cafes, ice cream shops, and stalls offering drinks prepared with fresh coconut—something for everyone.
The most surprising part is on the upper floor. Two shops there really caught my eye during this visit. The first stop was D’Brujas. What a fascinating place!
They specialize in making natural cosmetics and medicinal products; all their ingredients are gifts from nature. I love the idea of taking care of my skin with ingredients from our own land, free from so many chemicals.
But the best part is that, if you want, they can customize the products to suit your skin's needs! That attention to detail and that truly artisanal approach seemed incredible to me.
Right next door, another fragrance caught my attention: that of the artisan perfume brand Clara Camalleri. Here, the magic is different. Have you ever dreamed of having your own fragrance, unique and one-of-a-kind? Well, here it's possible.
They guide you in creating a perfume to your liking, blending essences until you find the combination that defines you. It's a sensory experience that goes far beyond a simple purchase.
And although everything is wonderful, I must confess that what I love most about the San José Market isn't something you buy, but something you feel. It's the space occupied by Island Job.
This theater group, made up of incredibly talented actors, has transformed one of the old warehouses into a vibrant cultural space. Here you can enjoy comedies that will make you laugh out loud and profound social dramas that will keep you thinking for days.
We met with some of their actors, and they explained that with each play, the stage layout changes, so every time you see a new performance, it's like being in a different place. This visit was truly a very moving experience.
If you come to Havana, visit this market, wander through its stalls, have a coffee, smell the perfumes, create your own, and if you can, stay to see a play. I'm sure that, like me, this place will steal a little piece of your heart.

Mi Visita a los Almacenes San José de La Habana
Hola, mis amigos. Si les gusta explorar y conocer lugares con alma, acompáñenme en este recorrido de hoy.
Hoy quiero llevarlos de paseo conmigo a uno de esos lugares de La Habana que, para mí, contiene la esencia de la ciudad: su pasado, su presente vibrante y su espíritu emprendedor. Les hablo de los Almacenes San José, un rincón que mucho más que un centro cultural, es una experiencia para los sentidos.
Está ubicado en la hermosa e icónica Avenida del Puerto, justo en la entrada de la Habana Vieja. Antes de entrar, me detengo un momento a observar su fachada robusta y su estructura de hierro, armoniza con el entorno colonial de su alrededor.
Es difícil no sentirse pequeño frente a semejante gigante de metal construido en 1849 donde emplearon más de 3.000 toneladas de vigas de hierro. Su objetivo era guardar toda la mercancía que llegaba de ultramar y la que se quería exportar como el azúcar, café y tabaco que se producía en la isla.
Con el paso del tiempo, se fue transformando. Hoy ha recobrado una nueva vida, no de almacén, sino otra, un espacio cultural gigante lleno de color, arte y gente.
Lo primero que sientes al entrar es la energía vibrante que te da la bienvenida con el mercado de artesanías, éste es el corazón del lugar. Es un laberinto de creatividad donde se reúnen los mejores artesanos de la ciudad.
Recorremos sus pasillos llenos de colores y texturas: preciosas piezas de cerámica y de madera, ropa de lino y algodón bordada, tejidos a crochet, joyería única hecha con semillas y metales. También hay cientos de cuadros de pinturas con diferentes temáticas, para escoger. Es el sitio perfecto para encontrar ese regalo especial que tanto buscas y sabes que te llevarás un pedacito del talento cubano.
Hay cafeterías, heladerías, puestos que te ofrecen bebidas preparadas en el coco fresco, hay para todos los gustos.
Lo más sorprendente se encuentra en la planta superior. Hay dos locales me encantaron en esta visita.
El primero fue D’Brujas. ¡Qué lugar tan fascinante! Se dedican a la elaboración de cosméticos naturales y productos medicinales, todos sus componentes son regalos de la naturaleza. Me encanta la idea de cuidar la piel con ingredientes que vienen de nuestra propia tierra, libres de tantos químicos. Pero lo mejor es que, si lo deseas, ¡pueden personalizar los productos según lo que tu piel necesite! Esa atención al detalle y ese enfoque tan artesanal me parecieron increíbles.
Justo al lado, otro aroma me sedujo: el de la perfumería artesanal Clara Camalleri. Aquí la magia es otra. ¿Alguna vez soñaron con tener su propia fragancia, única e irrepetible? Pues aquí es posible. Te guían para crear un perfume a tu gusto, mezclando esencias hasta encontrar la combinación que te define. Es una experiencia sensorial que va mucho más allá de una simple compra.
Y aunque todo es maravilloso, debo confesarles que lo que más me enamora de los Almacenes San José no se compra, se siente. Es la nave de Oficio de Isla. Este grupo de teatro, compuesto por talentosísimos actores, ha convertido una de las antiguas naves de almacenaje en un vibrante espacio cultural. Aquí puedes disfrutar comedias que te sacan carcajadas y dramas sociales profundos que te dejan pensando durante días.
Tuvimos un encuentro con algunos de sus actores, nos explicaron que con cada obra se cambia la distribución del set, por eso cada vez que contemplas una nueva obra es como si estuvieras en un lugar diferente. Esta visita fue realmente una experiencia muy conmovedora.
Si vienen a La Habana, visiten estos Almacenes, entren, piérdanse entre sus puestos, tómense un café, huelan los perfumes, créense uno, y si pueden, quédense a ver una obra. Estoy segura de que, como a mí, este lugar les robará un pedacito del corazón.
