Today I want to share a very special experience with you: a walk along one of Havana's most iconic and charming avenues, located in the heart of Vedado. I'm referring to Avenida de los Presidentes, popularly known as Calle G.
This tour begins on the Havana waterfront and extends to Avenida Salvador Allende. Although I didn't walk its entire length, I explored the stretch from Línea Street to Avenida 23. Each stop was a blend of artistic contemplation and connection with history. The lush vegetation surrounding it provides a unique serenity; everything about this walk exudes beauty.

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una experiencia muy especial, un paseo por una de las avenidas más emblemáticas y encantadoras de La Habana, ubicada en el corazón del Vedado. Me refiero a la Avenida de los Presidentes, conocida popularmente como Calle G.
Este recorrido comienza en el malecón habanero y se extiende hasta la Avenida Salvador Allende. Aunque no la recorrí en su totalidad, exploré el tramo desde la calle Línea hasta la Avenida 23. Cada parada fue una mezcla de contemplación artística y conexión con la historia. La exuberante vegetación que la rodea brinda una serenidad única; todo en este paseo rebosa belleza.
On this avenue, vegetation sprouts vigorously, as if each tree defies the surrounding urban geometry. Its lush gardens and shadows intertwine with the tall buildings that rise in this modern epicenter of Havana. Surrounded by contemporary architecture that looks to the sky, the avenue offers a visual dialogue between the organic and the structural, nature breathing amidst concrete and glass.
This brief but profound journey reveals how urban art and collective memory intertwine. The Avenue of Presidents is a space for walking, but it also invites reflection and connection with history. Along the route, monuments dedicated to historical figures from Latin America stand.
En esta Avenida la vegetación brota con fuerza, como si cada árbol desafiara la geometría urbana que lo rodea. Sus jardines exuberantes y sombras se entrelazan con los altos edificios que se alzan en este epicentro moderno de La Habana. Rodeada por una arquitectura contemporánea que mira al cielo, la avenida ofrece un diálogo visual entre lo orgánico y lo estructural, naturaleza que respira entre concreto y vidrio.
Este breve pero profundo recorrido revela cómo se entrelazan el arte urbano y la memoria colectiva. La Avenida de los Presidentes es un espacio para caminar, pero también invita a la reflexión y a conectar con la historia. A lo largo del recorrido, se alzan monumentos dedicados a figuras históricas de Latinoamérica.
Walking through the intersection with Línea Street, I came across the Simón Bolívar monument, perhaps the most impressive of all. It appears on a marble pedestal, astride his steed, advancing. It represents the struggle for independence and the dreams of Latin American unity. Around it, the lush vegetation and marble-covered avenues enhance its majesty under the blue sky, creating an unforgettable image.
Caminando por la intersección con la calle Línea, me encontré con el monumento a Simón Bolívar, quizás el más impresionante de todos. Aparece sobre un pedestal de mármol, a horcajadas de su corcel, avanzando. Representa la lucha por la independencia y los sueños de unidad latinoamericana. A su alrededor, la exuberante vegetación y las avenidas cubiertas de mármol realzan su majestuosidad bajo el cielo azul, creando una imagen inolvidable.
A few meters before reaching 17th Street, crossing the paths lined with benches and abundant vegetation that extend along the beautiful avenue, we come across the Omar Torrijos monument, sober and firm, honoring the struggle for sovereignty of the Panama Canal. A sign next to the pedestal highlights his role in the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. The natural greenery softens the solemnity of the marble and allows for a reflective pause.
Unos metros antes de llegar a la calle 17, atravezando los senderos con bancos y abundante vegetación que se extienden a lo largo de la hermosa avenida, nos topamos con el monumento a Omar Torrijos, sobrio y firme, que honra la lucha por la soberanía del Canal de Panamá. Un letrero junto al pedestal destaca su papel en los Tratados Torrijos-Carter. La vegetación natural suaviza la solemnidad del mármol e invita a la reflexión.
We continue along this beautiful promenade, and as we pass 17th Street, the Benito Juárez monument rises, a contemplative figure, reminding us of his iconic phrase: "Respect for the rights of others is peace." His figure, though small, radiates justice and humanity. I love this phrase because, beyond its symbolic value, it has an everyday application that never fades.
Seguimos por este hermoso paseo, y al pasar la calle 17, se alza el monumento a Benito Juárez, una figura contemplativa que nos recuerda su icónica frase: «El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz». Su figura, aunque pequeña, irradia justicia y humanidad. Me encanta esta frase porque, más allá de su valor simbólico, tiene una aplicación cotidiana que nunca se desvanece.
Before reaching 23rd Avenue, we encounter the figure of Salvador Allende, his arm raised, seemingly pointing to an invisible horizon, as if tracing with his gesture the path toward the great avenues he himself dreamed of, as he would say in his phrase, "Much sooner than later, the great avenues will open where the free man will walk..." The sculpture shows him firm and serene, as if his voice still echoed among the trees. His monument is a promise carved in stone, a reminder that dignity can be stronger than weapons. A man who believed in history made by the people.
Antes de llegar a la Avenida 23, nos encontramos con la figura de Salvador Allende, con el brazo en alto, aparentemente señalando un horizonte invisible, como si trazara con su gesto el camino hacia las grandes avenidas que él mismo soñó, como diría en su frase: «Mucho más temprano que tarde, las grandes avenidas se abrirán por donde caminará el hombre libre...». La escultura lo muestra firme y sereno, como si su voz aún resonara entre los árboles. Su monumento es una promesa tallada en piedra, un recordatorio de que la dignidad puede ser más fuerte que las armas. Un hombre que creyó en la historia hecha por el pueblo.
