That's what happened when I went back to Almendares Park, that vibrant green oasis beneath the bridge that connects the central municipalities of Playa and Plaza in Havana. This time I went with my mother and nephew, and together we rediscovered a corner that holds memories of my youth and that still inspires wonder. I highly recommend a visit: it's a beautiful place, ideal for various activities. A stroll there is always enjoyable and restorative.
Hay lugares que, cada vez que los visito, traen a mi mente recuerdos entrañables. Así me ocurrió al volver al Parque Almendares, ese pulmón verde que vibra bajo el puente que une los céntricos municipios de Playa y Plaza, en La Habana. Esta vez fui con mi mamá y mi sobrino, y juntos redescubrimos un rincón que guarda memorias de mi juventud y que aún hoy sigue regalando asombro. Recomiendo mucho su visita: es un lugar hermoso, ideal para realizar diversas actividades. Un paseo por allí siempre resulta entretenido y reconfortante.
The park entrance, right under the bridge, greeted us with a burst of color; enormous, vibrant murals transformed the concrete into a living gallery. Further on, under one of the bridge's wings, we found a corner that brought a nostalgic smile to my face: the reading area. There, among wooden benches (now metal) and murals of open books, I used to study with my classmates. The river breeze, the birdsong, and the generous shade of the trees made that place a perfect classroom, where ideas took root with greater clarity.
El acceso al parque, justo debajo del puente, nos recibió con un estallido de color; enormes murales vibrantes transforman el concreto en una galería viva. Más allá, bajo una de las alas del puente, encontramos un rincón que me hizo sonreír con nostalgia; el espacio de lectura. Allí, entre bancos de madera ( ahora metálicos )y murales con libros abiertos, solía estudiar con mis compañeros. La brisa del río, el canto de los pájaros y la sombra generosa de los árboles hacían de ese lugar un aula perfecta, donde las ideas se fijaban con mayor claridad.
Today, that spirit remains intact. The park has grown without losing its essence. The old mini-golf course is still there, now revived with vibrant colors that invite play and laughter. Just opposite, the original playground—now a little larger—offers the little ones their own world of adventures. We also discovered a small shooting range, discreet but intriguing.
