The Water Gypsies of Barisal.jpg

There are hundreds of rivers, streams and water courses in Bangladesh, but the Matamuhuri River, is only one of two that rises within the country's borders.

It stretches some 180 miles, from the Arakan Hills in Chittagong before emptying into The Bay of Bengal. It is a lifeline for many remote communities

The river and its forests are home to a number of indigenous communities, who rely on the river and surrounding forests for resources such as fuel wood, bamboo, food and medicinal plants. ( travelling river gypsies in particular are known for their "healing skills").

There are some Rohingya refugees from Burma in the area there are some tensions with local communities. A combination of factors, resource scarcity, economic strain, and security concerns and the refugees inability or want to fully integrate.

See ladies , don't waste any more money on expensive hair products, they really are the emperor's new clothes. Just go dunk yourself in the nearest river

Does my bum look big in this?

It is also the only source of water for bathing and personal ablutions

Communities along the Matamuhuri River are also facing several other challenges, including corporate deforestation, water scarcity due to illegal and unplanned extraction, and the necessity of growing vast tobacco plantations which require copious amounts of water to thrive.

Some of the many tobacco plantations alongside the river, Bangladesh is the world's 12th largest producer of the leaf. Smoking.

Thanks! And you too, enjoy your weekend!
Any exciting plans?

Nope, not with thunderstorms forecast LOL, was gonna go to a vintage steam machinery festival at Oswestry, but..... , well let's see what the weather brings!!

You travelling?

That’s a shame. Hope the weather eases off and you still can go.
I just returned home Tuesday after being away for 6 weeks. So lots to catch up on in the garden / around the cabin.
A little rest after a long road trip north. But… I am planning the first return leg next month already.
Next to packing boxes and finishing the renovations haha it keeps me fit !LOL

I just can't believe I forgot to go to the Gym again yesterday.
That's six years in a row now.

Nope up early still unpleasant weather, I could imagine there is a lot to do 6 weeks on the road sheesh.
Chill out lol

Did it clear up a bit?
Sounds like a stay inside weekend and cosy up on the sofa.
I got a time frame to adhere to. But… also time to chill 🧘🏻‍♀️ 😎

LOL when you get to my age time frames don't exist! yeah not a lot to do , to wet to be outdoors Ho Hum

Fascinating glimpse into a world we can never imagine living in! Having to rely on the river for washing oneself and garments is quite unthinkable. Where do they get drinking water from?
No need for locals to go and buy tobacco, just pick it😉

Well a lot of these villages have hand pumps to underground streams how clean it is I don't know.

The Matamuhuri River provided you with wonderful scenes that you knew how to capture like the expert that you are!

I am always very grateful for this comprehensive insight you offer us.

;)

"blushing" thank you x
