What's up friends!
It's been quite a while since I posted about a strange animal, that's mostly because I haven't encountered one with that wow factor, at least for my standards 😄
But today I stumbled upon one that deserves a spot in my blog.
Allow me to introduce you to what probably is the most bad ass millipede ever!
Meet Eucentrobolus tamulus, aka the armored millipede:
All the photos above are from inaturalist, feel free to click the link for more pics of this badass critter. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any videos for your viewing pleasure.
The species was first described in 1903 and is native in Southern India.
Not surprisingly, the species is best known for their hard, sclerotinized exoskeleton, which gives them an armored appearance. Imo, they are like they popped out from a video game or something :)
The exoskeleton helps them to protect them from predators and dehydration.
Much like other obscure creatures I have featured in my blog... They are poorly studied and understood so there's really not much to say about them.
There's not even a Wikipedia entry for the species! All I found was an old paper but I couldn't access it because I no longer have academia access.
Feel free to leave a comment if you can find any more info 😁
Ok, I guess this is it for today, hope you enjoyed discovering yet another wonder of nature with me!
P.S. Tagging @enginewitty for this one, I think he will love it 😄
