Perhaps I should have also mentioned the motion of the planets, described by Johannes Kepler, a 17th century German astronomer. He was the first to give a convincing description of the motion of the planets, saying that each planet describes an elliptical orbit around the Sun, which occupies one of the two foci of the ellipse.
