The community has a tradition of powering up (or "staking") liquid HIVE in the first of every month. It also boosts how much weight your outgoing votes carry, and how much reward you can earn by curating posts and comments by others. You can always power down again later, albeit with some delay, if you need the liquid HIVE again.
