Cuando pienso en mi niñez en el campo, me salta al recuerdo el sol despuntando entre hileras de maíz y el canto del gallo anunciando un nuevo día, mis amadas matas de mango y el rebullicio de mis hermanos corriendo y haciendo travesuras por todos lados. Con tan sólo doce años, mis manos conocían el peso de la tierra y la ternura del tallo que brota, y además tenía la responsabilidad de asistir a mi madre con todos los quehaceres de la casa y el cuidado de mis hermanos.
Fui creciendo, y aunque amaba profundamente mi tierra, decidí emprender nuevos horizontes en búsqueda de oportunidades que me permitieran salir adelante y también ayudar a mis hermanos. Tenía apenas 20 años cuando llegué a la ciudad capital, en la que encontré un universo hecho de calles asfaltadas y luces eléctricas, muy distinto a aquellas calles de pura tierra de Pariaguán.
Cada día era un reto que me invitaba a dejar atrás viejos hábitos de campo al vertiginoso pulso de la capital, a manejarme en medio de la multitud, a conectar con ese ritmo urbano, a enfrentar la prisa... por muchos momentos añoraba mis atardeceres, andar descalza en la tierra, compartir con mis hermanos… y debía repetirme una y otra vez, no abandones, no te jubiles, sigue adelante.
Hasta que llegó el amor y con él la familia, las niñas… un mundo nuevo, la aventura de ser mamá y tantos otros aprendizajes. Fui maestra de “educación especial” durante treinta años, fue mi mayor etapa de desafíos y experiencias aprendidas, hasta que me jubilé de mi profesión para abrir paso a otras oportunidades, así, abrí mi emprendimiento de cocina desde casa.
Ahora, con setenta años en mi bitácora de vida, mi espíritu late con el mismo brillo de aquella niña que correteaba descalza, por eso quiero decirte ahora “Nunca te jubiles”, más bien Reinvéntate, después de que cierras una etapa la vida sigue expandiéndose hacia otros horizontes, siempre hay algo nuevo por aprender, algo por hacer o por probar. El corazón no envejece mientras lo mantengamos abierto a la curiosidad y a perseguir nuestras pasiones.
When I think back to my childhood in the countryside, what comes to mind is the sun rising between rows of corn, the rooster crowing to announce a new day, my beloved mango trees and the commotion of my siblings running around and getting into mischief everywhere. At just twelve years old, my hands already knew the weight of the earth and the tenderness of the sprouting stalk, and I was responsible for helping my mother with all the household chores and taking care of my siblings.
I grew up, and although I deeply loved my land, I decided to seek new horizons in search of opportunities that would allow me to get ahead and also help my siblings. I was barely 20 years old when I arrived in the capital city, where I found a universe made of paved streets and electric lights, very different from those dirt roads in Pariaguán.
Every day was a challenge that invited me to leave behind old country habits in the fast-paced capital, to navigate the crowds, to connect with the urban rhythm, to face the rush... Many times I longed for my sunsets, walking barefoot on the earth, sharing with my siblings... and I had to repeat to myself over and over again, don't give up, don't retire, keep going.
Until love came along, and with it, family, children... a whole new world, the adventure of being a mother, and so many other lessons learned. I was a special education teacher for thirty years, which was my most challenging and rewarding period, until I retired from my profession to make way for other opportunities. That's when I started my home-based cooking business.
Now, with seventy years in my life log, my spirit beats with the same sparkle as that little girl who used to run around barefoot. That's why I want to tell you now, Never retire” Instead, Reinvent yourself. After you close one chapter, life continues to expand toward new horizons. There is always something new to learn, something to do, or something to try. The heart does not age as long as we keep it open to curiosity and pursue our passions.
