Dependence on AI

Chatgpt came back online a couple of hours after I shared my blog on the servers downtime. It looked like a big relief to friend I know that heavily rely on it for almost everything.

How quickly something can become part of our everyday life, it's quite a strange thing. Using tools like chatgpt was optional just a year ago. It's feels almost impossible for son many people to work without it now. The internet showed just how many people rely on Chatgpt yesterday when it stopped working for a while. Across social media platforms, the confusion, panic and frustration poured out. It was a complete disruption to how people get through their day. I'm stuck, I can't do without it, these were the words of some of my friends. It makes sense if you think about it.

Writing emails, brainstorming ideas, fixing codes or summarizing long documents, these are the things people rely on Chatgpt to do. And in many offices, these things are required. So work for them is not close to possible if chatgpt is not working.

Those who done rely on it for work rely on it for what they used to do with Google, that is to make search. The difference however is that search on gpt is faster than search on Google since you don't have to go through numerous websites just to get your answer.

It says a lot, the very fact that millions of people noticed the outage at once. So that means, they were all on the platform when it happened and they immediately panicked. AI has really gotten dip into our daily routines. We have started to trust the tool like a coworker, whether for better or for worse. It is now going to be obvious to some bosses or CEO that when AI models goes quiet or works slower than usual, work is significantly affected.

We may be scared of such level of dependency but perhaps that's the whole idea of technology I'm the first place. I realized that every big shift in tools like for example, from simple calculators to personal computers, came with moments like this.

The only lesson I got from yesterday was to be careful not to lean so much on these tools that I forget the basics of my own daily life activities.
