The students rushed through their exams when the teacher announced one minute left. The teacher was surprised at their actions, and she asked them where the answers or ideas had come from because before she announced one minute left they had all sat there as though they were finished or had nothing to write. The students did not look up to respond to her. They kept their heads down and wrote as fast as they could.
Their chairs scraped the floor now and then, and the sound of quick scribbling filled the room. A few of them bit their lips in concentration, and others held their papers steady with the side of a hand so their writing would not slip. The teacher walked between the rows and watched them with growing curiosity, wondering how they had moved from silence to sudden effort. When the time was up, she rang the bell and asked everyone to raise their pens while she began to collect their exam sheets desk by desk.
