I had lived with Mr. Dickson, my landlord, for almost three years, tolerating the flooding in our compound. Every rainy season, the water would rise, making it difficult to navigate. The flooding had become a normal part of life, but it was far from ideal.
I recalled a particularly frustrating experience when I was rushing to an interview, and my documents got soaked in the floodwater. I had to go back home, dry them, and reprint some, which made me late for the interview. It was an awful experience, and I wished Mr. Dickson would take action to resolve the issue.
Finally, after years of pleading, Mr. Dickson agreed to dig a trench to alleviate the flooding issue. I was relieved and couldn't wait to walk out of my house without wading through water. The prospect of dry passage was a welcome change, and I looked forward to a flood-free life.
