Planning a retreat with Augusta was like taking an unexpected ride on an amusement park's roller coaster. By the time she finished lunch, her word salad left Margot more nauseated than the after-effects of the Ghost Pepper Powder sprinkled atop Margot's Mexican plate. But Margot accepted the challenge. A new island destination. Gravewick Oceanfront. An odd name for a place considered an excursion into paradise.

Margot had to admit that she didn't perform as much research as she normally would have due to career commitments, together with mandatory overtime. But then, she was rushed to make a decision.

Stepping inside the beachfront hotel, the friends chatted briefly while admiring the decor.

The signs posted near the buoys are merely gentle reminders to keep careful watch when strolling the shoreline near the caverns. Other than that, enjoy yourself during your stay," the clerk explained, then continued in a serious tone, "will anyone else be joining you?"

Margot hesitated, then busied herself finalizing the registry. Too embarrassed to admit she'd be vacationing alone, Augusta nudged her, then grinned. It was acceptable to vacation alone, her silent smile validated.

Now, staring out over the hotel balcony, the view wasn't anywhere close to that paradise pictured in the brochure Augusta enthusiastically shoved into Margot's hand during lunch a month ago. But then, the vacation industry was expert at luring unsuspecting vacationers, she reasoned. Even the reviews didn't match the scene that confronted her.

So she stood in the afternoon breeze looking out over gently cresting waves, thankful for a respite from heat back home. In the distance, a lone seagull hovered over a small vessel, confirming the industry surrounding the resort by the mild odor that waffled up toward the fifth floor.

Inching closer, she stared down at the sand. A few palm trees provided shade to sparse beach chairs and tents below. She wrapped her hands around herself. I could do with a healthy dose of sanity and unconditional love this week, she mused.

She loosened her ponytail and shook out her hair.

Hoping to ease the turmoil of the past six months, she hugged herself with both hands, flung around, and promised to embrace the week ahead despite the first impression. The nearby caverns and bat cave provided more interest.

She decided to rest, spoke briefly with Augusta, then took a nap while Augusta explored the surrounding beach.

Perhaps I was judging the area through a tired lens, Margot surmised the next morning as she readied herself for the day's planned activities. Her surprise came, though, when she was unable to reach Augusta. The concierge relieved Margot's worry when he handed her a message.

Supplies and picnic basket packed, Margot headed toward the beach to await Augusta's return. She had to admit that the small island was a pleasant place to spend time sorting out one's troubles.

No sooner than she prepared a suitable spot under a vacant shade tree, applied her sunscreen, then donned her sunglasses and settled into the recliner, did she gasp a sharp breath. She cringed upon hearing a familiar chuckle. Jerking her head in the now sinister sound's direction, she shuddered.

Her breaths quickened. She was breathing hard, so she clutched her throat to calm the heavy breathing for approaching was Augusta with Blaine following close behind.

Within arms length of Margot's recliner, Augusta stood with her hands on her hips smiling widely as if she'd accomplished some great feat. She glanced between her friend and her friend's ex-boyfriend.

Blaine paused as if unsure how to proceed in the moment or what Margot's reaction would be, but quickly recovered as his persona dictated. He spread his arms wide and cocked his head, smiling, as if he hadn't received her text never to contact her again.

The subsequent gaslighting Blaine attempted to transfer to her was a whole other matter that forced her to cut ties with him forever.

In a frantic rush to understand why Augusta would divulge their plans or invite him, Margot realized that she didn't confide in her. The adulterous circumstances of their breakup she hid, only mentioning a few issues they needed to sort out. It wasn't that Margot wasn't eventually going to tell her, she just decided the time wasn't right. The betrayal knife still lodged deep, twisting at each remembrance.

Margot waited, trembling inside. She let escape a soft, bitter laugh.

It didn't go unnoticed, but Blaine chose to ignore it else raise Augusta's suspicion. He'd already concluded that she hadn't confided their tumultuous relationship to Augusta, who was supposed to be her friend.

Margot and Blaine exchange a knowing glance. She watched as he reveled in his conceited smugness.

The game was afoot.

He extended his hand and waited. Margot allowed her hands to remain at her side.

Blaine was a big-mouthed, blustering braggart of a man, except when confronted by small spaces.

She looked past him toward the caverns situated on the other side of the resort. The gaslighting sessions rose from the depths she'd bottled, then buried, and stirred an act of retributive justice.

She pumped her fists and silently thanked Augusta. The Gravewick Oceanfront, at first unacceptable, now suited her purpose.

Oh, this is deep ... I feel like this is the beginning, not the end... big blustering Blaine better look out!

Yes, Blaine had better look out because it's the beginning of the end for him with his smug attitude. Oh, what a tangled web he wove that he'll discover when led to the cove.
