Freewrite - “A Session Musician”

in Freewriters4 days ago

Some people learn music involuntarily. They're made to attend lessons they don't enjoy and practice instruments they barely tolerate until they reach an age when they can cast them aside for good.

Marcus grew up envying kids with that particular problem. Music lessons were a luxury, both in terms of time and money. He loved music, but life had other plans. By the time he turned 18, his hands had already been toughened by years of hard work anywhere that would hire him, just to survive.

The thing that changed everything was a lottery ticket that he didn't even buy. He happened to have an uncle who regularly spent his entire paycheck on alcohol and lotto tickets. Most folks would say that was a bad way to manage your finances. And they'd be right 99.9% of the time. But somehow, one day, all of that questionable decision making paid off to the tune of thirty million dollars.

So, when that lucky uncle asked him what he wanted, Marcus told the truth. He wanted to learn an instrument, something with strings, well enough that he could make a living off of it. And, bless his heart, the old man agreed to foot the bill. After all, it wasn't as if he had made his fortune by carefully following the beaten path.

Thus, against all odds and after years of intense, joyous study, a session musician was born.

Like most of my freewrites, I have no clue how long this actually took me. I guess music has been on my mind lately, so I'm glad i got to write something in response to todays prompt. It almost feels like fate, maybe i should write a song...

Anyway, if you feel like writing too, you can check out today's prompt over here.
