An interesting play on words is being offered to us today. The cultural context is important to understand what it means:

To deliberately exclude or ignore the person who is deliberately ignoring an obvious problem or an uncomfortable truth.



Curiosities

To understand this, you should know that “the ostrich” is the quintessential symbol of denial and evasion. It is based on the popular myth that ostriches bury their heads in the sand to avoid danger, believing that if they don't see the threat, it doesn't exist.

It is said that ostrich feathers are very wide, making them unsuitable for writing poetry, ha ha ha. The French naturalist Georges Buffon despised American animals, but he was a great man: seven feet tall, and he appreciated animals for their height (i.e., metric racism). This Buffon had the wit to call the ostrich the “elephant of birds” (Antonello Gerbi: The New World Dispute, chap. I).

Para esto, deben saber que “el avestruz” es el símbolo por excelencia de la negación y la evasión. Se basa en el mito popular de que los avestruces esconden (entierran) la cabeza en la arena para evitar el peligro, creyendo que si no ven la amenaza, esta no existe.

Se dice que las plumas de los avestruces son muy anchas, de modo que no sirven para escribir ni poesía, je, je, je. El naturalista francés Georges Buffon despreció a los animales americanos, pero fue un gran hombre: de dos metros, y apreciaba a los animales por su estatura (esto es, racismo métrico). Este Buffon tuvo la humorada de llamar “elefante de las aves” al avestruz (Antonello Gerbi: La disputa del Nuevo Mundo, cap. I).
