Pass me the helmet, his dad said hurriedly as he put on his jacket.

Lucas looked everywhere for it... I can't see it, Dad. Where did you leave it?

It must be somewhere around here. Don't worry, it doesn't matter. I'll still be right here.

Since that day, the helmet has been hanging in the corner of the closet, as if waiting for that someone who won't come back.

Lucas sometimes looks at it from his bed. It's bright red with a sticker that says "freedom." That day, though, freedom cost him dearly, because his dad, being close by, didn't wear it, and...

That day everything changed.

The ambulance arrived too late; only the helmet remained, stored in the house, a silent witness to what could have been avoided.

Lucas hated the helmet deeply, but there was something that kept him from getting rid of it. Sometimes he put it on and felt protected, as if it kept him from the pain of her absence.

One day, his mom saw him wearing the helmet and said, "I wish he had worn it too."

They both remained silent, a lump in their throats filled with rage and sadness.

In the end, Lucas understood that the helmet wasn't a memory; it was a lesson that sometimes what we put off...

Becomes never again.
