The stereotypes exist today.

I wonder how many even realise how those stereotypes came to be. It's actually kind of incredible how quickly conceptions can be so completely altered in just a generation or two. As an outsider to the US I picture indigenous and Africans being as one with nature, because that has been their roots until even more recently than many 'civilised' people.

I think stereotypes are borne out of one group's concerted effort to portray another people in a certain negative light, thereby uplifting themselves. It spoken, shown, exploited long enough, certain type people already predisposed to thinking the worst will grab hold and hang on for dear life to justify their belief.

Yes, I do believe all indigenous people of the world understand and desire to live alongside others and nature as intended. Manufactured hierarchies have no place in any society.
