Review: Saturday Hive Chess S1R20

Earlier today, we played round 20 of the Saturday Hive Chess Tournament. Three words for the tourney: interesting, beautiful, and surprising. I won games that I didn’t think I could win. It’s been a while since I pulled off a good performance, and I’m glad I did that day. As usual, I’ll review some of my games.

Justfavour VS iamchessguy

Iamchessguy is quite a strong player. Before today, we played a total of 18 games, with 16 wins to him and 2 to me. This tells you that he is a strong opponent. However, I managed to grab one win for myself today. We both started the game well. I opened with my favourite opening and tried to laugh a quick attack, he was quick to defend it. Everything was going well until iamchessguy blundered his bishop.

The image above shows the blunder that made him resign. He moved his bishop from f4 to h2. He definitely did not notice the sneaky knight. Immediately he made this blunder, I sighted it and utilized it to my advantage. Surprisingly, Chessguy resigned after that. Maybe if he had played on we would have had a different outcome.

Justfavour VS Madchess

I got paired with Madchess three times. The first time, I played woefully, but the second time was different. As usual, she beserked. I blundered a pawn just within the first 30 seconds of the game. I didn’t let that weigh me down because it was just one pawn. Out of the blue, I pulled off a very brilliant move, but it wouldn’t have been possible if Madchess hadn’t blundered.

The image below shows my brilliant move. Madchess placed her Queen in a vulnerable position. I saw it and acted quickly. With her Queen gone, i relaxed and played calmly.

I enhoyed today’s games. The previous tournaments didn’t go well for me. It made me happy that I managed to turn the tides in today’s tourney.

As usual, thanks to our host @sam.chess . See you all next week.

All good @justfavour! You have what it takes to achieve this new goal on Hive! Keep it up!

Big congrats on your awesome performance in Round 20 of the Saturday Hive Chess Tournament! These events are always super fun to follow. I’ve decided not to play them myself though, since the internet where I live is really unstable. Nothing more frustrating than having the connection drop right when you least expect it, and by the time it comes back you’ve got barely any time left to finish the game—or worse, the clock’s already run out. So yeah, better not to play, because it’s not just about my skills (which aren’t that great anyway), but I could definitely aim higher if it weren’t for that issue.

That’s why I really appreciate your posts and those from other hivers who share their games from these great tournaments. By the way, that game where you pulled off the discovered check and snagged your opponent’s queen was brilliant. Once you’ve got that kind of decisive advantage, like you said, it’s all about staying calm and focused to avoid mistakes and keep the edge until you lock in the win.

So again, thanks for sharing your games and big congrats! And of course, shout‑out to our good buddy @sam.chess too.

Congratulations!
