My afternoon walk took me to the older part of town. I notice a bunch of orange bell-shaped flowers spilling over the fence. It was just a modest cluster leaning into the sidewalk as if curious about the passersby. The fence itself was weathered, its paint faded to a soft gray. The flowers seemed to soften the age of the fence.
I paused to take photos, not because they were rare or particularly special... but they did feel familiar in a way I couldn't quite name.
I leaned in a bit, noticing how some blossoms were still tightly curled, while others had opened fully. Their petals were thin and slightly translucent in the afternoon light. A few flowers had fallen to the ground.
There was something comforting in the ordinariness of it all. These flowers weren't part of a manicured garden. They had grown where they pleased, spilling over the edge.
I wondered if anyone else noticed them... the mail carrier, the kids walking home from school... or maybe they'd become part of the background, like the faded fence or the uneven pavement.
The flowers moved with the slight breeze. It felt less like more like witnessing than documenting. Like I'd stumbled into a moment that didn't need to be preserved... only appreciated.
Those modest orange bells had offered something: a pause, a breath, a flicker of memory I couldn't quite place. I walked on.
