A Breezy Afternoon Walk & Tasty Skewers: The Perfect Playground Hangout!

in Wednesday Walk2 days ago
Some afternoons are meant to be slow, easy, and full of simple joys.

Today was one of those perfect days—an afternoon walk at the park with my buddies, followed by some delicious street-style BBQ. Nothing fancy, just good food, great company, and to remind us to breathe and take life as it comes.

The sun had already started to soften by the time we arrived at the park. Long shadows were cast on the asphalt walkways by the golden glow of the trees. The breeze carried the faint scents of grass and cooked meat from surrounding booths. It was refreshing to be outside, away from screens and the daily grind, and away from the usual work schedule

Along the side of the playground, a few of the hardworking employees from our barangay hall have been tasked with keeping our plaza tidy, organized, and well-kept. Sweeping the grounds, pulling weeds, taking out the garbage, and making sure the neighborhood is always tidy and welcoming are their duties.

Soon, the scent of smoky barbecue became too tempting to ignore. A small stall near the park's entrance had just what we needed—sticks of perfectly grilled meat coated in a sweet and savory glaze, slightly charred at the edges. We grabbed a few sticks each, rice, and a side of spiced vinegar for dipping. The first bite was pure satisfaction—hot, juicy, and flavorful.

We started with a slow walk, chatting about everything and nothing at all. Conversations flowed effortlessly, from weekend plans to random memories that had us all laughing. The best thing about walking with friends is that time stretches, and problems feel smaller. There's something therapeutic about moving—one step at a time, one story at a time.

Eating beside the park with these two nearby seemed like a little feast. We stood about sharing bits and occasionally exchanging beverages while juggling our meals. The occasion was made much more memorable by its simplicity. Only the pleasure of eating, laughing, and spending time together was there; there were no outside distractions.

It's easy to get caught up in routines, always rushing or thinking about what's next—but today reminded me of the beauty of slowing down, of making time for simple pleasures. A walk, some BBQ, and laughter with friends—sometimes, that's all you need.

Beside the store, we bought some barbecues. These are Filipino foods, specifically exotic dishes made from the internal parts of pork or chicken. Like chicken intestines (isaw ng manok), pork intestines (isaw ng baboy), pork ears (tenga ng baboy), chicken feet (paa ng manok), and chicken head (ulo ng manok).

These will be grilled to bring out the rich flavors of the innards and various seasonings and spices. There's also a dipping sauce made of vinegar with onions and garlic, adding an extra kick to the taste.

Our plaza is one of our town's cleanest and most beautiful spots, serving as a central hub for various events and gatherings. It is the main venue for all programs and activities, especially during our town fiesta, when it transforms into a vibrant and festive place. During these celebrations, the plaza becomes grand and lively, filled with people from different parts of the community coming together to enjoy the festivities.

I'm standing on a metal swing set with a curved roof that mixes pastel and bright colors with blue and pink railings and green metal structures.

Various buildings, including a covered court with a green roof and a fenced-off area. There are also some slides and other play equipment visible behind me. The overall atmosphere gives off a nostalgic, small-town vibe.

There's something truly special about these quiet, unhurried moments. A simple walk, yet filled with so much life. With a heart a little lighter and a mind a little clearer. We headed home, already looking forward to the next escape. Until then, may we all find joy in the simple things.
