Havana, a walk between the past and the present [en/es]

Last week, I had to take several tours of the city as part of the numerous deliveries I made for my business, "Chocolates Alile." During these tours, I was able to appreciate the great architectural diversity that Havana offers, and I decided to join the #wednesdaywalk challenge organized each week by our friend @tattoodjay and show you what I was able to capture along the way.

Walking through Havana is like traversing pages of history written in stone, iron, and concrete. The city is not limited to a single architectural style; it is a melting pot of cultures where eras have left their mark, shaping an urban landscape that is both a testament to and an identity.

In Old Havana, the colonial splendor endures in its facades, wrought iron balconies that preserve centuries of history. Each arch reminds us that Havana's identity has deep roots, intertwined with the Spanish legacy, but reinvented by generations of Cubans who have imbued its spaces with a unique style.

One of the most representative examples of this legacy is the Gran Teatro de La Habana, a neo-Baroque gem that dominates the cityscape with its imposing ornate façade. It is an emblem of Havana's architectural richness and its enduring connection to artistic expression.

Another icon of the past is the Bacardí Building, an Art Deco masterpiece that rises elegantly in the heart of the city. Built in 1930, this building was once the tallest structure in Havana and remains a benchmark of the architectural sophistication of its time.

The University of Havana Steps, with its statue of the Alma Mater, are another landmark that highlights the city's identity. The sculpture, with its arms open, seems to welcome those who ascend the stairs, a reminder that knowledge and history are intertwined in the essence of Havana.

In contrast to these historic buildings, the Hotel Torre K represents a commitment to modernity and urban transformation. With its 42 floors and 154 meters in height, it has become the tallest building in Cuba, surpassing the nearby Hotel Habana Libre. Its construction has sparked debate, as some see it as a symbol of progress, while others believe it disrupts the city's architectural harmony. Its design, influenced by Brutalism and contemporary architecture, marks a new chapter in Havana's urban evolution.

This dialogue between the colonial and the modern is what gives Havana its unique identity. It is not a city that permanently coexists with its past and intertwines it with its present. Its architecture is a silent narrator of its history, reflecting the social, political, and cultural changes that have shaped its spirit.

On every corner, on every street, there's a conversation, a coexistence between what was and what remains. It's the old and the new living together in the same space. I love its history and its streets, although I always think they should be better maintained. I hope you enjoy this little glimpse into our daily lives.

Yes, Havana is beautiful, it's a shame we don't take better care of it, but there are some iconic buildings.
