Hello, Wednesday Walk friends!
This weekend I had the opportunity to take a long walk with my family and explore several places in Old Havana. Among all of them, today I want to share with you one of my favorites: La Plaza Vieja. Located between Muralla, Mercaderes, Teniente Rey and San Ignacio streets, this historic and charming square is one of the four emblematic squares in the area.

Este fin de semana tuve la oportunidad de dar un largo paseo con mi familia y explorar varios lugares de La Habana Vieja. Entre todos ellos, hoy quiero compartir con ustedes uno de mis favoritos: La Plaza Vieja. Ubicada entre las calles Muralla, Mercaderes, Teniente Rey y San Ignacio, esta histórica y encantadora plaza es una de las cuatro plazas emblemáticas de la zona.
Arriving at La Plaza Vieja, one is instantly transported back to 16th century Havana. I can visualize in my mind a bustling and lively scene, with crowds of people strolling around, merchants selling goods and town criers announcing the news of the day, just as it was in those times. It is exciting to mentally recreate all that vibrant atmosphere and feel part of it.
Al llegar a La Plaza Vieja, uno se transporta instantáneamente a La Habana del siglo XVI. Puedo visualizar en mi mente una escena bulliciosa y animada, con multitud de gente paseando, mercaderes vendiendo mercancías y pregoneros anunciando las noticias del día, tal y como era en aquellos tiempos. Es emocionante recrear mentalmente todo ese ambiente vibrante y sentirse parte de él.
On this occasion, however, the square was quiet, almost deserted. Unlike my previous visits, there were very few people. There was a small boy accompanied by his parents playing happily with the pigeons, while very few people strolled around that large square, silence reigned. Although my mind longed to hear the sounds and feel the energy of old Havana, this time I had the opportunity to appreciate the square calmly, admiring its beauty and details with greater attention.
En esta ocasión, sin embargo, la plaza estaba tranquila, casi desierta. A diferencia de mis visitas anteriores, había muy poca gente. Había un niño pequeño acompañado de sus padres jugando alegremente con las palomas, mientras que muy poca gente paseaba por aquella gran plaza, reinaba el silencio. Aunque mi mente ansiaba oír los sonidos y sentir la energía de la vieja Habana, esta vez tuve la oportunidad de apreciar la plaza con calma, admirando su belleza y sus detalles con mayor atención.
The Plaza Vieja is completely paved and in its center stands a majestic fountain that I had always observed from afar. On this occasion, I allowed myself to sit on its edges and contemplate it carefully. This marble fountain is octagonal in shape and inside it houses a hollow rectangular structure, crossed by a column that rises and culminates in an ornament that resembles a large cup. On each side of the rectangle, two shells pour water incessantly. It is a truly beautiful and captivating fountain.
La Plaza Vieja está completamente empedrada y en su centro se alza una majestuosa fuente que siempre había observado desde lejos. En esta ocasión, me permití sentarme en sus bordes y contemplarla detenidamente. Esta fuente de mármol tiene forma octogonal y en su interior alberga una estructura rectangular hueca, atravesada por una columna que se eleva y culmina en un adorno que se asemeja a una gran copa. En cada lados del rectángulo, dos conchas vierten agua sin cesar. Es una fuente realmente bella y cautivadora.
I cannot fail to mention the spectacular work of the renowned artist Roberto Fabelo, located in a corner of the square. It is an imposing rooster, above which stands a shaven woman, naked and in high heels, wielding a fork with patient firmness. Although one of the rooster's legs is tucked in, the other is firmly planted on the ground, conveying serenity and power. This sculpture is fascinating and attracts the attention of all visitors. Personally, I see this work as a symbolic representation of the strength and spirit of Cubans, both men and women.
No puedo dejar de mencionar la espectacular obra del renombrado artista Roberto Fabelo, situada en un rincón de la plaza. Se trata de un imponente gallo, sobre el que se alza una mujer rapada, desnuda y en tacones, que empuña un tenedor con paciente firmeza. Aunque una de las patas del gallo está recogida, la otra está firmemente plantada en el suelo, transmitiendo serenidad y poder. Esta escultura es fascinante y atrae la atención de todos los visitantes. Personalmente, veo esta obra como una representación simbólica de la fuerza y el espíritu de los cubanos, tanto hombres como mujeres.
Around the square you can see several buildings of varied architecture. Each has a unique style, but all share the characteristic of having wide corridors with columns facing the square. This visual harmony is charming and enhances the beauty of the place.
Alrededor de la plaza se pueden ver varias edificaciones de arquitectura variada. Cada una presenta un estilo único, pero todas comparten la característica de tener amplios corredores con columnas que dan hacia la plaza. Esta armonía visual resulta encantadora y realza la belleza del lugar.
