After an intense workday, my husband and I set out to find construction materials for the renovation of our home. Along the way, we decided to take a scenic route along the iconic 5th Avenue of Miramar, in Playa municipality, from 84th Street to the entrance of the Jaimanita neighborhood.
This journey gave me the chance to appreciate the harmonious balance between nature and urban design that defines this majestic avenue—one of Havana’s principal arteries. As we moved forward, the landscape unfolded its charm: lush trees, elegant residences, each telling a story of the city’s history and vibrant character.
Después de una intensa jornada de trabajo, mi esposo y yo emprendimos la búsqueda de materiales de construcción para la remodelación de nuestra casa. En el trayecto, decidimos recorrer un tramo de la emblemática 5ta Avenida de Miramar, en el municipio Playa, desde la calle 84 hasta la entrada del poblado Jaimanita.
Este recorrido me brindó la oportunidad de disfrutar el equilibrio entre naturaleza y urbanismo que define esta majestuosa avenida, una de las principales arterias de La Habana. A medida que avanzábamos, el paisaje desplegaba su encanto: frondosos árboles, elegantes residencias que narran la historia y el carácter vibrante de la ciudad.
Upon reaching the roundabout at 5th and 112, a landmark in this wide avenue, I encountered the old Cony Águila recreational center, now a fading memory of what it once was. Though only remnants remain, its presence recalls a time when it was a lively gathering and entertainment spot.
Al llegar a la rotonda de 5ta y 112, un punto de referencia en esta amplia vía, me encontré con el antiguo centro recreativo Cony Águila, que hoy sobrevive como un eco del pasado. Aunque solo quedan restos, su presencia evoca tiempos en los que fue un animado espacio de encuentro y esparcimiento.
Further down the avenue, at 5th and 120, I came across the imposing statue of Calixto García, one of Cuba’s heroes in the fight for independence. A distinguished military leader and strategist, he took part in the country’s three major independence wars. His statue, mounted on a horse with all four hooves on the ground, signifies that he died of natural causes rather than in battle—an intriguing historical detail to the avenue.
Siguiendo por la avenida, en 5ta y 120, apareció ante mí la imponente estatua de Calixto García, uno de los héroes fundamentales en la lucha por la independencia de Cuba. Este destacado militar y estratega participó en las tres guerras independentistas. Su figura, montada sobre un caballo con las cuatro patas apoyadas en el suelo, simboliza que murió por causas naturales y no en combate, un detalle que añade profundidad histórica a la avenida.
Throughout the avenue, beautiful palm trees flank the road, creating a tropical landscape that enhances the architecture of the surrounding buildings. After passing by the Náutico, I noticed, peeking through the treetops, the dome of a church subtly overlooking the avenue, surrounded by residences and restaurants that blend seamlessly with the area's greenery.
A lo largo del camino, las hermosas palmeras flanquean la vía, creando un paisaje tropical que realza la arquitectura de los edificios. Después de pasar por el Náutico, entre las copas de los árboles, distinguí la cúpula de una iglesia que asoma tímidamente hacia la avenida, rodeada de residencias y restaurantes que se integran armoniosamente con la vegetación.
A little further on, past the Hotel Palco, where the Jaimaita settlement begins, lies the entrance to Fusterlandia, a truly magical place. Here, creativity transforms urban space into a large-scale work of art, decorating streets and houses with fragments of colored tiles. It is a community project created by Antonio Rodriguez Fuster. Every corner of Fusterlandia is an explosion of popular art, turning the neighborhood into a vibrant open-air museum. I've been here several times, but very quickly, I think I owe it a thorough visit and tell you all about its history and creation.
