Hello friends of Wednesday Walk! Today I want to take you by the hand to a place that was a surprise to me. Whenever I visit the Hotel Nacional, I always let myself be enveloped by the freshness of its terrace, the vegetation that seems to embrace the sea, and that air of history that is always present.
On this occasion, I was walking aimlessly, letting myself be guided by intuition, when I found myself in front of a door I had never noticed before.
Hola amigos de Wednesday Walk ! Hoy quiero llevarlos de la mano a un lugar que fue una sorpresa para mí, pues siempre cuando he visitado el Hotel Nacional me dejo envolver por la frescura de su terraza, la vegetación que parece abrazar el mar, y ese aire de historia que siempre estás presente.
En esta ocación caminaba sin rumbo, dejándome llevar por la intuición, cuando me encontré frente a una puerta que nunca había notado.
When I walked through, to my surprise, I came to a bar that seemed like something out of another time. The ceiling was covered with black and white photographs, portraits of figures who had passed through the hotel. The walls were also filled with images, as if the place were a photo gallery marked by time. This bar is none other than the Gallery Bar.
Cuando atravesé y, para mi sorpresa, llegué a un bar que parecía sacado de otro tiempo. El techo estaba cubierto de fotografías en blanco y negro, retratos de figuras que han pasado por el hotel. Las paredes también estaban llenas de imágenes, como si el lugar fuera una galería fotográfica marcada por el tiempo. Este Bar no es otro que el Bar Galería
I asked the clerk if I could explore it, a little timidly, feeling like I was entering an intimate, almost secret space. He replied yes, that I could even take photos. And so I did, without giving it much thought; something about that place drew me deeply. I came across a huge model of the hotel, an antique jukebox that looked like it had come straight out of a movie, and a ruler that, according to a note I found there, belonged to the hotel's original casino. I stopped in front of it in amazement, an object that had spun during nights of luxury and chance, now a piece that elegantly adorns the grounds.

Y eso hice, sin pensarlo demasiado, algo en ese lugar me atraía mucho. Me encontré con una maqueta enorme del hotel, una vitrola antigua que parecía recién salida de una película, y una ruleta que, según un escrito que encontré allí mismo, perteneció al casino original del hotel. Me detuve frente a ella con asombro, un objeto que giró en noches de lujo y azar, ahora convertido en una pieza que adorna el recinto con elegancia.
Two congas adorned the bar, as if the music were always about to begin. The bar area was well-stocked with all kinds of drinks, and I was struck by the impeccable order of the space. Although I didn't consume anything, the waiter was so attentive and friendly that I felt like a special guest.
Dos tumbadoras adornaban el local, como si la música estuviera siempre a punto de comenzar. El área del bar estaba muy bien provista de todo tipo de bebidas, y me llamó la atención el orden impecable del espacio. Aunque no consumí nada, el dependiente fue tan atento y amable que me sentí como una invitada especial.
I also discovered two life-size statues: one of Compay Segundo, creator of the famous Chan Chan and member of the Buena Vista Social Club, whose voice gave life to traditional Cuban music around the world; and another of Nat King Cole, the iconic American singer and pianist whose warm voice and elegant style made him a jazz and pop legend. I couldn't miss the opportunity to take a photo next to the sculptures of these two musical celebrities.
También descubrí dos estatuas de tamaño real, una de Compay Segundo, creador del célebre Chan Chan e integrante del Buena Vista Social Club, cuya voz dio alma a la música tradicional cubana en todo el mundo; y otra de Nat King Cole, icónico cantante y pianista estadounidense, cuya voz cálida y estilo elegante lo convirtieron en una leyenda del jazz y el pop. No pude perder la ocasión de tomarme una foto junto a las esculturas de estas dos celebridades de la música.
In another corner, I saw a bust that stopped me in my tracks: the face of Yuri Gagarin, the first human to travel into space, depicted wearing his cosmonaut helmet. I was surprised to see it there, amidst photos of artists and politicians. I'd heard that Gagarin visited Cuba in the 1960s, and this small tribute commemorates him with discreet solemnity.
En otro rincón, vi un busto que me detuvo el paso, el rostro de Yuri Gagarin, el primer ser humano en viajar al espacio, representado con su casco de cosmonauta. Me sorprendió verlo allí, en medio de fotos de artistas y políticos. Me contaron que Gagarin visitó Cuba en los años 60, y este pequeño homenaje lo recuerda con discreta solemnidad.
Almost next to the entrance is a collection of antique objects: two white ceramic filters, a wall clock, and what looked like a wooden whisk or masher. I wasn't sure what they represented, but it seemed like a small glimpse into domestic life from bygone days, as if the hotel also wanted to remind us that history lives on in the everyday.
Casi junto a la entrada hay un conjunto de objetos antiguos, dos filtros cerámicos blancos, un reloj de pared, y lo que parecía un batidor o macerador de madera. No supe con certeza qué representaban, pero me pareció una pequeña muestra de la vida doméstica de otros tiempos, como si el hotel también quisiera recordarnos que la historia se vive en lo cotidiano.
And to top it all off, after a tour filled with nuances, emotions, photographs, and discoveries, I left the bar and, looking to the left, found myself with a beautiful view. The pool, defined by the hotel's architecture and the serene blue of the day. It was like a final breath, where I said to myself, "Yes, all this exists, and I have experienced it."
Y para culminar, después de un recorrido lleno de matices, emociones, fotografías y descubrimientos, salí del bar y, al mirar hacia la izquierda, me encontré con una vista hermosa. La piscina, enmarcada por la arquitectura del hotel y el azul sereno del día. Fue como un respiro final, donde me dije internamente “Sí, todo esto existe, y lo he vivido.”
