Have you heard of a new place that’s exactly the kind of spot I love—totally covered in huge rocks of different colors from years of sunlight? Rocks, rocks, and more rocks that are exposed during the summer in Amazonas, just because. Usually, these are covered by the river and, honestly, you can’t see them, but on this hike—which took about 30 minutes to get there—I was able to see part of what lies beneath the river almost all year round.
On one of the days I was visiting a pretty remote spot—which took me about 17 hours to reach—we decided to go out and explore a bit. Honestly, our plan was always to find a river to swim in, because most indigenous communities in Amazonas have a nearby river. What we didn’t count on was that the dry season had taken its toll, and the water level had dropped significantly.
The truth is, it was a little sad to see that the water level was low, because when that happens, the river doesn’t flow as fast as usual, and debris from tree leaves and other things tends to accumulate. This, in a way, makes you feel less safe when swimming because the water is already dark—it has a deep brown color that, while it lets you see what’s underwater when you’re close, only allows you to see so far.

Conoces un nuevo lugar que es de esos sitios que me encantan, totalmente lleno de rocas grandes y con colores distintos debido al sol que les ha pegado por años, rocas, rocas y más rocas que quedan al descubierto cuando es verano en Amazonas, porque sí. Por lo general, estas están cubiertas por el río y, honestamente, no se ven, pero en esta caminata que duró alrededor de unos 30 minutos para llegar allí, pude apreciar parte de lo que hay debajo del río casi todo el año.En uno de los días que estuve de visita en un sitio bastante lejano, al que me tomó unas 17 horas llegar, decidimos salir a explorar un poco. Honestamente, nuestra intención siempre fue conseguir un río en el cual bañarnos, porque en la mayoría de las comunidades indígenas de Amazonas hay un río cercano, con lo que no contábamos era que el verano había hecho de las suyas y este había bajado un montón.
La verdad fue un poquito triste ver que estaba baja el agua, porque cuando es así, pues el río no fluye con tanta rapidez como de costumbre y se acumula un poco el sucio de las hojas de los árboles y demás. Esto, de alguna manera, hace que uno no se sienta tan seguro al bañarse porque ya de por sí el agua es oscura, tiene un marrón intenso que, si bien cuando estás cerca te permite ver qué hay debajo del agua, la visión llega hasta cierto punto.
However, I focused on the positive: for the first time in my life, I was able to walk over a river by stepping on the rocks that are normally beneath it. In fact, I made my way to the other side of the community, because the rocks allowed me to hop from one to the next. And the truth is that this little while we spent exploring was a unique moment in which I could only marvel at just how full of surprises creation is.
Obviously, summer was in full swing and the heat was pretty extreme, and it would have been great if we could have cooled off in the water. Even so, we were able to spend some time there observing, taking photos, and watching how the locals—being used to these changes in the river—were just going about their business, swimming in the deepest part of the river that remained.

Sin embargo, me centré en lo positivo y es que por primera vez en mi vida pude pasar por sobre un río cruzando por las rocas que normalmente están debajo de él, de hecho crucé hacia el otro lado de la comunidad, porque las piedras me permitieron llegar de brinco en brinco. Y la verdad es que este ratito en el que estuvimos explorando fue un momento único en el que solo pude maravillarme por lo llena de sorpresas que está la creación.Obviamente el verano pues estaba haciendo de las suyas y el calor era bastante extremo, y hubiese sido genial que hubiésemos podido pasar el calor dentro del agua, aún así pudimos estar un rato allí observando, tomando fotos y viendo cómo las personas de la zona, al estar ya acostumbradas a estos cambios en el río, estaban como si nada bañándose en la zona más profunda que quedaba de este.
Something that really caught my attention is that this river was part of the Orinoco River, and it surprises me that, even though the Orinoco is a massive river and, to be honest, if you look at it up close it doesn’t seem like its depth changes at all, the truth is that passing through areas like this makes it clear that it does, in fact, on the highest rocks we could see the mark left by last winter, which caused the water to rise higher than usual, and I find it amazing how there can be such a huge change from one season to the next and how people have already adapted to this.
This hike was a moment of total relaxation for me because it was in a place completely removed from the city, and yes, I love small towns and very remote places where the most valuable thing is the beauty that surrounds you. That day I climbed rocks nonstop, and honestly, the experience was amazing. And although I explored many places during my time in Puerto Samariapo, in Venezuela’s Amazonas state, this was one of my favorites.
