Today I share with you a little piece of one of the most incredible places that has, in my opinion, the historic center of Old Havana. In that place there is a mix of history and art: so my first Wednesday walk of the new year became a very pleasant moment that I want to share; and thus join the #wednesdaywalk challenge promoted by @tattoodjay.
I'm talking about the Casa del Marqués de Arco, located on Mercaderes street, and turned into a museum and exhibition gallery. The building is currently undergoing a restoration process, but the area where the goldsmith's shop is located remains open to the public. The building is recognized as one of the best examples of 18th century residential architecture in Cuba.
Hoy les comparto un pedacito de uno de los sitios más increíbles que tiene, a mi consideración, el centro histórico de la Habana Vieja. En ese lugar existe una mezcla de historia y arte: así que mi primer paseo de miércoles del nuevo año se convirtió en un momento muy placentero que deseo compartir; y unirme así al reto #wednesdaywalk promovido por @tattoodjay.
Les hablo de la Casa del Marqués de Arco, ubicada en la calle Mercaderes, y devenida como museo y galería de exposición. La edificación actualmente se encuentra en un proceso de restauración, pero el área donde se ubica la orfebrería se mantiene abierta al público. El inmueble es reconocido por ser uno de los mejores exponentes de la arquitectura residencial en Cuba del siglo XVIII.
The works currently on display are by Cuban sculptor Jorge Oliva, who was awarded the UNESCO prize in 1997. The sculptures are very striking because they are woven with copper wires of different gauges and are usually figures with women's bodies that simulate beings from another world.
Las obras que se exponen actualmente son del escultor cubano Jorge Oliva, quien fue premio de la UNESCO en el año 1997. Las esculturas son muy llamativas porque están tejidas con hilos de cobre de diferentes calibres y por lo general son figuras con cuerpo de mujer que simulan seres de otro mundo.
Also its walls are decorated with pyrography in wood that tell in a very unique way the history of goldsmithing.

As I am very curious, I managed to peek into the workshop that adjoins the main hall where very talented young people also learn the art of goldsmithing, who explained to me that they are currently engaged in the design and development of a collection of jewelry and suggested me to take a tour of other areas of the building.
Como soy muy curiosa, logré asomarme al taller que colinda con el salón principal donde trabajan jóvenes muy talentosos que aprenden también el arte de la orfebrería, quiénes me explicaron que se encuentran enfrascados actualmente en el diseño y elaboración de una colección de joyas y me sugirieron dar un recorrido por otras áreas del inmueble.
The building has 3 floors and the roof struts are quite high as it was the style of the time to make the houses cooler and avoid the high temperatures of the weather.
La edificación tiene 3 plantas y el puntal de los techos es bastante alto como se estilaba en la época para lograr que las viviendas fueran más frescas y sortear las altas temperaturas del clima.
I enjoyed walking through the inner courtyard of the house, the sun was hot near the water well that was in the middle and I imagined the warm afternoons of the time. I still managed to take a picture of a very nice kitten resting peacefully.
Me gustó mucho caminar por el patio interior de la casa, el sol calentaba cerca del pozo de agua que se encontraba en medio e imaginé las cálidas tardes de la época. Igual alcancé a tomar una foto de un gatico muy simpático que descansaba con tranquilidad.
I really enjoyed my Wednesday hike, it bodes well for seeing other amazing places on the new lap of the sun in 2024.
