Hello Wednesday walkers,
I played a tourist in my own country a couple of weeks ago. We had some visitors over from Spain and we wanted to show them some of the most touristic attractions. And one of them, of course, was the Zaanse schans!
Near the town of Zaandam you have a little tourist trap village that is called the Zaanse Schans. There they show you how people lived century's ago. This is literally the Netherlands century ago in the small. You can visit a cheese factory, wooden shoe makers ore visit one of the windmills that are along the dike. Most of those windmills are still working and you can visit couple of them to see how they are working.
Those houses are so cute. This is the cheese factory. It's not really how it was in the old day's but it's very cool to see how the process of cheese making went 100 years ago. I couldn't go in because I had the dog with me. But you can taste a lot of cheese inside to.
Doggy 😍
Towards the dike the first windmills are standing proud along the river.
This is a paint mill. There the crush limestone together with pigments to make a base for paint. The big stone wheels rolls around and are crushing the limestone. On the left you see the wooden stampers who can bee turned on by changing some gears in the top of the mill so that they can mix the limestone and coloring.
More gears and wheals
The millstones from close up. The movement is visible.
It's really full of gears and wheals.
And this is an old display of the many types of pigments they used in the old days.
And the perfect ending of a cold grey day, hot chocolaty with wiped cream 🤤
