Metabolic syndrome is considered when 3 out of the 5 following criteria are present in a person:

Waist circumference is > 40 inches in male & > 35 inches in females
Triglyceride level is > 150 mg/dL.
HDL cholesterol is < 40 mg/dL in males or < 50 mg/dL in females.
Elevated blood sugar levels
High blood pressure

It is also known as Syndrome X. In the US, 1 in 3 adults has this syndrome, increasing their risk.
