I am so grateful to my creator that I was born at this age. I know, yes, right now the world seems to be going crazy and all. But I think I might have said the same thing if I were born back in those days. My mom is one of the victims of a very stupid system back in the old days.
Every time my mom tells us how she wishes she were able to complete her school and become a full graduate. And after finding out she yearned for further education every time she watched us advance in education, I no longer saw just the joy of her children being what she wished she could have been, but I also saw this longing still in there somewhere.
She told us the story of how, in her family, just like her mom, her dad forbade all his daughters from getting an education, and told them their place in this world was in their husbands’ houses. So she and her sisters stayed at home, only knowing basic English, while her brothers pursued education. She told us they envied their brothers.
Later, her dad sadly passed away, and she and her sisters started following her brother to school. They slowly got interested and enrolled in a free school. Their mom had better things to worry about, like feeding the family, so she gave it no thought.
My mom enjoyed school and always told us how she was among the best students, but eventually had to stop when it was time for secondary school. There was no money to continue, so she stopped. Later, she met my dad, who came to marry her and promised he would sponsor her. But after marriage, she came to realize that my dad too didn't see female education to be relevant at that time. At some point I don't know why he changed his stand on female education, but by that time it was too late, as my mom was tired of all the promises entering voicemail.
I know there are still some archaic people who, if given the chance, would go back to their old ways, but I believe they are very few, and there is no going back now.
In my country, we have come so far that education is now for everyone. There is no gender barrier stopping girls from getting the education they need.
But there are still some limits on how far some people are allowed to pursue education, not gender.
The number one limit is money, as one goes further in education, the cost of being a student keeps on increasing and not everyone can keep up with the expenses.
While there are some other cases where education is still limited by fellow human beings, for example, I have seen children working as house helps who aren't even allowed to go to free government school due to the wickedness of the people in charge of them.
So right now in my country, money seems to be the only limit on education, but I think if we search deeper, some people experience other limits that aren't money.
