What matters more?

The sole purpose of venturing into the world of business is basically for profit-making. "I think that is the number one priority." No doubt, you can't run an organization when your business isn't making a profit that will sustain the business.

Don't go ask a businessman why his into what he is doing today, because he would look at you like a spoiler or maybe an enemy. But then, come to think of it, what would a business look like without ethics? I know in my part of the world, should I say the world in general, because I don't want people to think that I'm always coming for the people in my part of the world.

Now, in the world today, if you ask some people the sole purpose of setting up a business, their answer is likely to be "to maximize profit." I'm not saying profit is a bad thing, but then a business should go beyond making profit. And that is where ethics comes into the picture.

In business, sometimes profit and ethics come hand in hand. The way importance is placed on profit, the same level of importance should be placed on ethics as well.

Little Story: Recently, I went to the local market to shop for certain things I was lacking in the house. One reason I don't like purchasing all items from a particular shop is because I don't like over familiarity; often, it could be a lawbreaker.

There is this shop I entered. I heard the shop owner talking to someone rudely. I didn't jump to conclusions because I just walked into the shop and wanted to observe. It's after the whole conversation was when I got to understand what truly transpired between them.

While purchasing my items, the shop owner wanted to transfer the same aggression to me. At that moment, I knew that person lacked ethics in business. Profit isn't always the first priority in a business; ethics should come into play as well.

When a business lacks ethics it is bound to fall into the gutters. Ethics enables a business to build trust between the business owner and its customers. Have you ever walked into a shop and the owner treats you like a "VIP"? Well, I've experienced that several times.

They say a business is supposed to give back to society and the environment in which it operates. I know often we get to decide between profit and ethics which a business must choose in terms of success. Many businesses today have proven that a business can succeed financially while prioritizing ethical practices.

Building a business based on ethics can lead to a long-lasting business. Ever imagined the reason people can't stay at a particular business and set it up for a very long period? The lack of ethics contributes to that as well. Profit alone doesn't keep you in business for long but adding ethics to it will make your business blossom like the palm trees.

In conclusion: businesses should learn to create a balance between profit and ethics.

If I were you, I wouldn’t even buy anything from that shop. Some shop owners have no manners, they just treat customers anyhow but they forget that they need your money and you need their product. It goes both ways.

I still bought it sha but after that day, I skipped that shop whenever I'm passing that area to get something.

Good.

I want to patronize you, and you are giving me attitude. I would walk away without buying anything... Bad attitude only pushes customers away, and before you know it, such businesses end up getting shut down...

Some of the qualities all business owners must have are humility and respect

Humility and respect, I agree with you on these. These are things every shop owner should possess.

I don't think that there are many profitable businesses that don't push the lines of ethics. They're squeezing their customer, or squeezing their supplier, or their staff, or a combination of all of them.

Profit means someone is losing value somewhere along the chain.

Yeah, I agree with you on this. Squeezing can't be good though.

If I would be treated like a shit in a shop, i would not buy anything in that shop talkless of patronizing them thereafter. I'm a customer and i have my right. Thanks for sharing.

Omo, some shop owners can be annoying, though.

Encountering such can be crazy. Often, I just walk out.

A balance between profits and ethics is how you keep the business afloat.

Yeah I agree with you
