Recently, I was going through feeds on social media, "Facebook," to be precise, and I came across a video a lady made. Now little secret about my online self, I'm the type that loves reading comments "Yeah" Sometimes if I want to get the full story about something I just go to the comment session and start reading people's comments, and from there, I begin to get the full story and what people's opinions are.
Going through the comment session, I saw a lot of criticism and hateful words toward the lady. So, I couldn't continue in the comment session. Rather, I decided to watch the movie for myself. The lady said after giving birth to her second child, the doctor said she wouldn't be able to carry a child in her womb, so the lady and her husband decided to go for surrogacy because they wanted to have another child before finally giving up on childbearing or like my aunty will always call it "hang booth" so the only solution the couple had was surrogacy.
After hearing the whole story and being lost in my head on why people are so bittered towards others, this person had a medical condition and decided to go for surrogacy, and people of the world are criticizing her for doing it; they keep forgetting the medical aspect of the whole story. Besides, the eggs that were taken to form the pregnancy still belonged to the couple, then one person commented "The child does not belong to you, and she will look for her biological parents soon."? Seeing This particular comment made me laugh the hardest.
I feel like people don't care about certain things, just like they won't understand certain things, it's only when they find themselves in that position that they'd be able to understand. And also like the story a very popular Nigerian celebrity shared on why she chose surrogacy because she has had so many miscarriages and people are angry because she tried the only method that seemed like the solution and today she is blessed with a child even if it's through surrogacy its doesn't matter because it was her egg that was fertilized.
Gone are the days when women were called "barren." In the world today, no woman is barren; scientific advancement has proven different ways in which women can have children, but then "don't be scared of the but." The financial aspect of it is likely to be a hindrance for some people because such things are very expensive.
I don't see surrogacy being a bad thing. Rather, it is another way that has been provided medically for couples who have medical conditions to conceive through it though it has to do with a third party, but then who cares when biologically the child is yours? This method of childbearing shouldn't be abandoned because it is something that has been seen as the only hope for certain couples. And if abandoned, they'd become childless for the rest of their lives; I know they can adopt, but then not every couple likes that adoption option.
Surrogacy is something I will get into if the need arises and maybe if it's the only option I have. Everyone should be allowed to give birth using the methods that suit them, and thanks to the advancement of science, no woman can be called barren again.
