So we all know that there are rules and regulations, laws that every country must abide by, There needs to be order that will protect and guide the people of the country and help them make sure that things are done on fair terms. So heres the question, 'Should the law care about what is right or wrong?' Well, this is now where morals and ethics play a big role in lawmaking.
So let's continue by knowing the differences between law, morals, and ethics.
LAW: Laws are official rules that were or are made by the government, and when these laws are broken, there are consequences to face.
Morals: Morals are ones personal or cultural beliefs about what is right and what is wrong, and this mostly comes from their family, religion, values, etc.
Ethics is similar to morals , but it is in a more professional form.
While some persons might say that the law should only deal with real crimes like theft, violence, fraud, etc., this is because they do have their point, like everyone should be allowed to live the way they want so far as they are not causing harm to others, and also just because one person thinks that something is wrong , this doesn't mean that we must force every other person to believe it. If this is done , it is more like you are using the law to control the private lives of people, and it can also be seen as an abuse of power. A very good example is those that place sports bets, as in ,this is called gambling. A lot of people don't like it , but people do it because they don't see anything wrong with it , so because of some sets of people, should the government now make it illegal? I mean, come on, there are a lot of stores where all this gambling is done, like it's just the way these people live, and they, of course, aren't causing any harm to anyone.
Yeah... Many people believe that morals and ethics are important for shaping laws. Well, already most laws already reflect the basic ideas of what is right and what is wrong, like laws against murder, stealing, lying, and cheating. It's also there in the Bible, so there aren't just laws but also moral values. In a case where it is found hard to even measure harm, they use moral reasoning and all, and that's why there is a NO to discrimination , even when those involved are not hurt physically. When you are mistreated because of your nationality, gender, age, or religion , it is already tagged as morally wrong.
Stuff like hate speech There's no physical harm, but sometimes it makes people feel unsafe and scared and even drags them to do what they are not supposed to do. Also, cheating in a relationship is seen as morally wrong, but that does not mean that it should be tagged as illegal, because it is a private matter and should remain thus. So at the same time, we need to be careful so that the law that punishes people because of their choices doesn't make others uncomfortable too, so we know that freedom matters a lot.
See, it is just very tricky to base laws on morality because morals can be different depending on where you are from, where you live, what your culture is, etc. So I just think in making laws, it needs to be centered around the common values of people and not on one particular group. Yes, I can't dispute the fact that morals and laws are connected, but not everything that is wrong needs to be termed illegal. But yeah, at the same time we can overlook the fact that laws are just cold and logical rules, they are shaped by what we as people believe in. The idea is just to make sure it's a belief that serves everyone.
So morals and ethics really matter when making law, but the main thing is knowing how to use them in a WISE manner.
