How Social Media Empowers and Divides Nigerian Politics

This is my entry to Hive Learners weekly contest.*

Politics, they say, is a dirty game, which is no new word for people. Politics is the survival and thriving of the majority. As we have the majority groups, we also give room for minorities, but still yet all things center on the majors. As it now centers people, people now try to do anything in order to belong and fit in on the people's lips. Social media is really working in its own way on the politics of Nigerian culture. Positive it is while still negative, it is doing that.

People are trying virtually everything to be on the good sides of the masses; they are giving free education and empowerment and sharing materials with people, which are very good. All those are recorded and might be uploaded on the social media platform for people to see and appreciate that which they are doing.

As they are doing all this, is it genuine or all for selfish interests of oneself? If the person wins by God's grace and now counters by looting up the government funds, which might be used for one purpose or the very other,. How they appear to the masses is now not a big issue to them; they are already in the seats holding the mantle of leadership.

Many people don't know people in person. So whatever they might hear others saying is that in which they would follow them up, so always trying to be on the good side is really not a good side, even to the extent of pretending, which is not the good and ideal thing to always do.

Since the politicians now know how the country operates, they now utilize it very well for their own good. They know that whatever is on the minds and mouths of the people circulates faster; they now really try to make use of it for their own personal gain.

The voters on their own sides still try to sing melodies of the people in which they like the people. They sing and always show the good things that they are doing for the online family to see and support them more.

One thing is that when people are doing good things, we all know that it is good, but when there is a hidden motive behind it, it is still good but not really good. Sometimes these politicians try their best, but also some do all these things, maybe not from their minds but to receive the mantle of that leadership. All that they are doing is not from pure intentions but might be coming from selfish interests, which, when they now emerge the winner, they might now have a U-turn towards those actions.

Everything we as individuals always do should come from our good-hearted intentions with nothing attached to it. We should not do this and have another thing in mind; it might disappoint us, but all in all, we should always be of sound and free minds.

Change that starts today really starts early. So we should always try to look at people and not judge them maybe by what is around. Another is that those in politics should always try to do everything that is good from their good-hearted intentions with no strings really attached to it.

How Social Media Empowers and Divides Nigerian Politics is really a concern that should be looked in.

We keep hoping for the best.
