Ethics are important

My Entry to the Hive Learners Weekly Contest

This week’s topic is truly a powerful one — it speaks straight to the heart. Ethics is not just a word we hear thrown around. It is a way of life, a compass that should guide every human being in society. It's easy to overlook, yes — often swept aside like it doesn’t matter — but in the long run, it is deeply important. It affects the family, the community, and the entire world we live in. Ethics is like a light we are all supposed to carry within us — a kind of moral compass we should never lose sight of.

To me, ethics and morals shouldn’t just be left as vague ideas or spoken of only in classrooms or religious places. They should be deeply rooted in the rules and regulations of every country. Sometimes, when morals are not taken seriously — when they’re ignored or treated like they don’t matter — that’s when society begins to spiral. That’s when small wrongs grow into bigger problems. Before we know it, what once seemed harmless now becomes a serious crime.

Back in secondary school, we had a compulsory morals class every Thursday. I always looked forward to it. We were taught about our faith, how to grow in it, and how to walk in the right path — by God’s grace. Those lessons shaped many of us. They helped us see the difference between right and wrong, not just by what the world says, but by what God says.

I strongly believe — with all my heart — that ethics and morals are not optional. A very big YES is my answer to whether they should be part of a country’s code of conduct. When people live only to please themselves, ignoring how their actions affect others, it may not look like they’re breaking the law — but they’re certainly breaking something deeper: the bond of human dignity and respect.

The sad truth is that many don’t even care about the consequences anymore. As long as it feels good or convenient, they go for it — even if it hurts someone else. And that’s why ethics matters so much. It teaches us to think beyond ourselves — to love one another, to live in truth, and to do what is right even when no one is watching.

Ethics shapes our behavior and how we treat each other. When it’s truly embedded in us, it naturally flows into the laws of the land — and peace follows. I truly don’t believe people should just do “whatever they want,” simply because it’s not technically illegal. If it’s wrong, then it is wrong. Period. And society should never celebrate or excuse what is clearly not good.

Once something is not good, it should never be accepted. Whether you're a leader or a follower, we all have a role to play. And by God’s grace, those in authority must stand firm to uphold what is right — not for themselves alone, but for the good of all.

Ethics matter. Deeply. And we must take them seriously — in our homes, in our schools, in our government, and in our hearts.

Let us keep trusting God in all things. He alone can guide us to live in truth, love, and righteousness.
