Introduction
Before now, just the name of career or profession chosen or practised, the person are counted as successful and wealthy in our society. Everyone wanted to be in those career or associated with them to be viewed as successful individuals and be respected. Truly, it is an honor to bear their name and prestige to be accepted as their colleagues.
Our parents and relatives can even boast or happy because of the profession, one of their children or family members associated with. It's common then to hear names like "Mama Lawyer" or "Mama Doctor" which means that the successful woman is the mother of Law or Health practitioner and should be respected. In the labour market, those prestigious profession are highly valued and respected than other. But now, the norms and values have changed. Let's talk about this changes and it's significance.
It's obvious that many people lacks the needed skills even in their chosen career making them less successful and relevant in that human endeavor. Those people can't successfully defend their respective professions with good results. Whenever they face challenges in their field, they either ran away or give out a poor job. Truly, they have been trained or even certified on that chosen career, but lack of skills makes them less lucrative and unsuccessful.
Our school system needs to be upgraded with better curriculum activities that centered on skills development than passing of exams for certification alone. It should be graded based on skills acquired and developed throughout the school years than their oral and writing capabilities which the certificate stands for. During our school year, A boy named Matthew is very creative and skillful. He can mould and set up cement blocks or bricks from foundation to the finishing level but still failed his examination. His challenge was his low upbringing because he is an orphan and raised in the villages but very skillful in this chosen career because he have been in field, working alongside other skilled builders for years. Although having academic challenges, but in the job market, he is most prized and valued because he is highly sought and have build more homes than people with certificate but not practical oriented.
Skills acquisition and development pays higher than expected. Many people have made a good name and successful than just being a professional. For example, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are tech genius because of their coding skills, not just their career. Believe me that many people have been in that computer software field before them but they are more successful because of their profitable skills and talents.
The unemployment level keep increasing in many lands with new debutants every years. Reason for this increase might be many but lack of skills and experience topped them all. How can a medical trained personal still depend on internet search for the diagnosis and prescription of drugs? Such person will not be licensed, remain fake while practising or will be unemployed very soon. Some of them does not have the needed skills to excel in the job market but left behind. Opportunities can open at all time but they are not ready and does not have all it takes to be gainfully employed to contribute their quota to the development of the country.
Values are placed on skill and good output than professionalism in the job market. Chinese and japanese engineers might not be certified but graded highly because of their skillful output in their jobs. Look at their development over the years and how they value skills and hard work to achieve more. Their employment rate is high with more people at work than just bearing huge names in the society but nothing to show for that.
Even in entertainment or sporting activities, these informal sector of the economy are highly valued and prized with financial benefits due to their skills. Many good footballers and others are rated highly based on their skills which translated into their market value. For example, how many of these celebrated athletes are good in academics, but excellent in their field due to their skills. They might not been academical sounds or still find it hard to communicate like some coaches can't speak good english language but are paid higher than others. They are famous and celebrated, not of conventional careers known. They have acquired and developed their skills through vigorous and mental training to be fit for good results.
Finally.
The world keep evolving so we should improve ourselves constantly with many skills in relevant fields constantly to be established, purposeful and successful in our endeavors. Having better skills and develop them will give us an edge before others in the job market and improve our values.
