When you go through standard countries that have a working system, there is nothing like data privacy. The government monitors her citizens strictly through their databases. These countries can easily access their citizens through their data both in good and bad times and I think it is a good thing.
Technology has even made all things public, so far we all use phones and other gadgets, our calls and internet surfings are been monitored so there is no privacy anywhere again. The only privacy we have is our private lifestyles in the comfort of our homes.
Although not everyone loves a private life, the majority of people nowadays now live at the expense of the public, they do whatever they like to the best of their knowledge online, but they don't know that the internet never forgets even if they might have forgotten their past deeds.
To me, there is nothing special if our government can have access to our data in as much it's for security reasons, it's even to our benefits because there are some situations in which we can't help ourselves but if the government steps in the solution is sure.
If I'm not mistaken, part of the importance of the government having access to databases in any country should be for security purposes so as to safe guard her citizens and also track criminal activities.
But here in Nigeria, the government does absolutely nothing with our databases, what always saddens me is that, why are kidnappers and banditries still existing in my country when every now and then people register their mobile lines with NIN (National Identification Number). No Nigerian can do anything pertaining to registration without having this so called NIN, it's very important but crime is still on rampage.
So I see no reasons why they have access to our data and crime isn't subsiding. But it's only when something bad happens to a top official or an influential man that we all will know that the security agencies can do what's beyond the citizens imaginations.
For instance, if an influential fellow or any of our top politicians got kidnapped, you will be surprised with the way the security agencies will work tirelessly to safe guard the fellow but if it involved someone from a poor family it takes the grace of God before such fellow will be rescued. All what you will be hearing will be "we are working hard to get to the root of the matter" and at the end the fellow might end up being killed in the kidnappers den.
There are preferential treatments in the way the government deals with each and everyone of us here in times of needs and it's very bad. The government here doesn't channel their ability in the right direction but to unnecessary stuff that isn't beneficial.
I still believe there is absolutely nothing wrong in the government having access to our data, but much work needs to be done here because they aren't using it for its main purpose. They need to work harder to convince us that our safety is paramount to them.
