I have been hearing about climate change for a berry long while now but I never really had a personal experience because things have always appeared normal around me. I did not have any reason to worry about any climate change until not long ago when I experienced it.
My experience with climate change was a very terrible one that I could not help and at some point, it even seemed like I was under a punishment.
It all began early this year when I travelled to a certain part of Abuja to stay for a while and cool off from all the stress that came with medical school and especially final exams.
What I did not expect was the hot weather that welcomed me. Initially, I assumed it was normal but by the time I needed to go into the bathroom every 30 mins to take my bath, I realised that this was not normal again, I had never experienced such before.
The weather was so hot that even the water I want to use will be hot. Few minutes after taking my bath, I will already be feeling soo hot that I will need to take another bath.
The heat was not just bad for the body but also for the food. After cooking food, if care is not taken, it will sour prematurely because of heat. As a result I have to cook very little or warm the food very frequently.
The only thing which made the weather a little bit bearable was the availability of running water within the house as it afforded me the liberty to take my bath as many times as my body required to keep cool.
At some point, I had to call my friends in other locations and enquire if the weather was the same for them but I was told that it was not same. It seemed like I was in hell on my own.
To make matters worse, there was shortage of electricity supply during that time and so putting on the fan was not an option. You know how frustrating it can be when there is power outage and everywhere is just so hot.
From my experience, I would say climate change is actually as terrible as it is portrayed to be especially in regions that are badly hit. Some areas don't have it as bad as some others hence the inhabitants of the spared areas may underestimate it but those who have seen both sides would readily agree with me.
It would be nice if the environmentalists continue to give us advice on how to navigate these changes inorder for our lives not to be affected so negatively by it.
I got one with my experience would be willing to listen and make amends where necessary. Living in such conditions as I experienced is not a good thing and should be avoided as much as possible.
