In our world today information and knowledge is often seen as key to success, but the question is does being literate help us to be a better person? The answer is quite obvious—being able to read, write and comprehend complex ideas surely open doors and brings opportunities our way. It helps individuals to know their rights and responsibilities. Literacy is undeniably powerful.
However, literacy does not make a person better, whether someone becomes truly a good person depends more on their moral character and behavior than their academic knowledge.
Being a better person goes far being learned, there is a saying “charity begins from home”. When a person is born, how he or she is raised, what he or she is taught plays a big role on their moral behavior, even as a parent or a neighbor being a better person is not about graduating from the four walls of the university, I remember while I was in the university.. A student was transferred to my school in 300level, we were in same class and same department, the first week that he arrived–he would dress well and put on reading glasses, he was the calmest of all the other boys in the our class, to be honest I thought he was a good person, we talked a few times and he would always invite me to his house off campus and thank my stars I never went.
For the first few weeks, he potrayed himself to be a good and calm, not untill he started skipping classes back to back, he didnt even write test, he was always smelling of weed, to the exent that he didn’t even write first semester exams, and later he was caught in the middle of the night trying to steal from other students in girls hostel, and that was how he was rusticated from school, he did so many bad things, there was even a time that he was involved with some cult boys and his sister was brutally injured because of him.
This particular boy was literate, my school wasn’t the first school that he had been to, and even untill now I’m very sure he did some bad things at his previous school and that was why he was sent to another school, but unfortunately he couldn’t hide his bad behaviour, some of the bad boys all around also went to school, going to school doesn’t a person is less inclined to hurt other people, many of our leaders today all went to school but they hurt the masses with their eyes wild open without any consideration.
Being literate or being an illetrate doesn’t stop the fact that people can make mistakes that would put everyone in danger, we are only humans and we’re not perfect, although being learned can sometimes reduce the risks of making those kind of mistakes, especially when it comes to reading rules and regulations, a learned person would be able to see and read that “Danger is written on a sign board” and the person wouldn’t go further.
