Everybody on this planet, both young and old, forgets things at times. Sometimes it can't be a deliberate act, while other times it's pure forgetfulness.
There have been so many incidents in my life that I have forgotten major events of friends and family. But three events pained me most and I was very sorry about it.
There was this time when I was looking for a job, I kept applying and applying. Finally, I got an email to come for an interview. I prepared for it, only for it to be changed, and I totally forgot about the new date for the interview. I traveled to another state for something that was not even important.
I was in the kitchen cooking with my cousin when the discussion led to her telling me that she has an interview the next day. Ha! That was when I remembered that that day was my interview. Instantly, my mood changed. I rushed to send an email to see if it can be rescheduled but alas! They said no, they are to conduct all interviews that day. I wept so badly and even blamed them for changing the date, not even to a close one but to a one-month interval.
I promised myself that I was not going to forget ever again. Then, it was another time when I was home alone. I finished doing the necessary house chores and decided to cook jollof rice. While I was waiting for it to be done, I started watching TikTok videos. One caught my attention, and I decided to recreate the video.
I was so engrossed in making the video that I, who have a sensitive nose, didn't even perceive that my jollof rice was burning. To make matters worse, I took my camera and my ring light went to the front balcony away from the kitchen. Totally forgetting about my pot on fire, I tried to recreate it and failed. Then it occurred to me to bring some clothes. Just as I stepped inside, the smell and the smoke hit my nose and eyes.
That's how I would have burnt down the whole house because of a TikTok video; the rice was burnt to ashes. I had to hide the pot because I couldn't wash it clean at once, and it was showing that I burnt something.
What about the whole house that was smelling like burnt cloth inside? I was lucky that everyone came back in the evening; even then, those with a strong sense of smell could still perceive that something was burning.
The last time I forgot to pick up my cousin from school. His school closes at 12 on Fridays, but I was carried away with work. By the time I remembered, it was already 4 pm. I ran to the school, but everywhere was closed.I was asking around like a mad woman. I thought that he must have left on his own as I didn't come.
I searched everywhere possible. I even went to my mother's shop with style to check if he's there, but I refused to tell her I was looking for him. Finally, I decided to go home. He was home with the teacher waiting for me. He showed the teacher the road to our house. I had to apologize and pay the teacher's fare, then run back to work to pick up my things.
Since these incidents, I have started writing down everything that I am going to do in a day or in a month in my reminder, and I make sure it rings three times a day. In case I don't pick it up the first time, it will ring again, and I will finally pick it up. A reminder and a sticker paper help me out now.
