What sparked my love for technology?
On many occasions, I've sat down to think about how the world was a number of centuries ago when there was no form of technology. To a degree, the humans then adapted and were able to carry out activities of daily living. However, with the birth of technology, things must have gotten a lot easier.
Luckily, I was born in an era with technology that keeps improving with every passing day. Because of this, I guess I never really gave technology the accolades it deserves till a major event occurred.
About three years ago, my sister was in so much distress because her reading partner was diagnosed with appendicitis. The reading partner in question didn't trust doctors enough to let them do the regular open procedure; rather, she preferred to travel all the way to Ibadan to get a laparoscopic appendectomy. This was what led to the distress.
First off, the pains that come with appendicitis can be very severe and making a journey to an entirely different state can lead to complications if care isn't taken.
Second, not many people, including myself, knew about laparoscopy. Naturally, the doubt and insecurity that comes with new inventions set in. What if the doctors didn't know what they were doing? What if she was used as a specimen? What if something went wrong? So many questions came up.
I would like to quickly add two things; one, laparoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure where a laparoscope is used to visualise internal organs and perform surgeries. What makes laparoscopy so enticing is the fact that the whole process of tearing up a person's tummy and stitching it back is greatly (at least 80%) avoided, hence the term “minimally invasive”.
Two, during the regular open procedure, patients take long to heal and even longer before they can return to their normal activities.
Long story short, my sister's reading partner returned about three days later in great physical condition. She didn't have to bend to walk, nor did she complain of pain with every little turn she made. Naturally, I was intrigued. Only then did she explain the whole procedure and went ahead to show us the puncture sites through which the thin laparoscope was passed. This was the first time my love for technology was genuinely sparked!
It honestly felt so amazing to know that one wouldn't have to be lying in bed for so many weeks after a simple procedure. As such, cost is cut to the bare minimum and if the doctors do a good job, the patient should be up and doing in a week or less. I've seen videos from people testifying that within twenty-four hours of their surgery, they were discharged!
The medical field is one sector that has evolving technology. Just recently, a friend who is a data analyst approached me, stating that he too wants to build a technological device that will help make medical practitioners' jobs easier and I can bet that there are a thousand and one other people like him who find an issue in one sector and try to come up with ways to solve such issues.
Although there have been concerns that the evolution of technology is doing more harm than good, I believe that technology has been and will keep being a great help to the human race.
