My First Wi-fi Experience

in Digital Lifestyle2 months ago
The year was 2014 and my parents just got me a laptop, my first laptop. A small Samsung mini laptop, portable and beautiful. I loved it so much because I had already completed computer training about two years before and using a desktop was not always possible because of difficulty in carrying it about.

I could do a lot with the laptop as I was knowledgeable with a lot of computer programs but I could not use the internet and I didn't know how to go about it until my sister who was an undergraduate at the time took me to her school and connected me to the school wi-fi. It was a very memorable day for me as I was able to use the internet without limitations. She put me through the initial steps of logging into the WiFi and opened some sites for me to create accounts.

That was the day I created an email address, a facebook account, a twitter account and even some social media accounts that are no longer popular today.
I even joined the popular 2go which was already becoming outdated at that point in time just to see what I missed since I couldn't join when my mates were joining.

Joining all these socials helped me to link up with some old friends whose contacts I did not have. Before then, I would need to have a person's phone number before being able to connect and communicate either through call or text message but these apps just needed a little detail about you with which they would now show you a wide range of people and like magic, a lot of them would be people you actually know.

I remember seeing a lot of friends on Facebook pop up under the "people you may know" section and with that, I began sending friend requests and before long, I had a whole lot of Facebook friends whom I could chat with. It was interesting especially when a group/page was created on Facebook and my old schoolmates all joined the group and the fun was massive as we were all missing ourselves and interacting actively.

My first experience with the internet was amazing because of my old friends whom I could connect with by just clicking.

I was also able to make new friends on the internet, two of them were foreigners. As a matter of fact, all the international friends I have made over the years were given to me by the internet since I have never left my country.

Another thing the internet offered me was the ability to browse various concepts and people. I remember browsing about celebrities and great political leaders of both my country and other countries especially the Legendary Nelson Mandela of South Africa.

I quickly got myself hooked on the internet because it offered me a whole lot of opportunities both for learning and for meeting people and this was what I needed at the time.

There are lots of things to gain from browsing the internet and joining social media platforms - information, connecting with people all over the world, business opportunities and more.

Indeed, the list gets longer as we progress in this digital age.
