It was very late after a party, and while my friends prepared to do a part two of the celebration at a night club till daybreak, I just wanted to go home. My social battery was really low, I was tired and my little sister was calling me every second for God knows what.
I ordered a ride, and after the driver found out what price the app told me to pay, he insulted me and cancelled the ride. The second driver also said he wanted twice of the price. And on a normal day, I would have paid, but the distance was literally a walking one. But I couldn’t walk because it wasn’t safe at that time of the night.
At a point, my friend offered to drop me home, but I really didn’t want to stop him from having fun with the others. After trying so many times, I got a ride. The person was old and sounded tired. I thought twice about it but since it was a short distance, I thought “oh what at all can even happen to me?”
I entered the car and he started the ride. And I know the old drivers to be chatters but this one was very quiet. For about 2 minutes, he hadn’t said a word so I just felt something was wrong. I decided to ask him if he knows where we were going. I asked him the first time, and he didn’t answer. The second time, same. So I thought he just wasn’t in the mood.
Someway somehow, my eyes flashed on the rear view mirror and he was asleep!!! Yes, he was sleeping. I began panicking because the car was also moving. I thought okay since I didn’t have my glasses, I wasn’t seeing well so let me move forward and check. I popped in between the front seats from the back and this man had already reached Heaven.
I wanted to scream, but I also knew that could scare him and get us into an accident. So I tapped him gently and when he woke up, he apologized and started telling me how his day went. How he was so tired because of what he did during the day.
I only said one thing “Please let me drive while you sleep, my house is just here”. He didn’t even hesitate, he parked and gave me the keys. At that time, I didn’t even know how to turn a car around. All I knew was accelerating so I did that and thankfully, I got home in 7 minutes.
After getting down, I thanked God for my life, paid him and just entered my house. That was the day I understood Carrie Underwood very well, and I’m not even joking because, the kind of prayers I said behind that wheel? Stop!! The way I danced that Sunday at church, everyone was surprised but it was only me that knew what God had done for me.
