Just yesterday, my little sister who is going through adolescence came to me asking if I had a condom. I was very busy so I just said “no” and then she left. I didn’t really pay attention to the question the first time because I was in the middle of something really important. She came back again and this time she went like “oh, but why don’t you have a condom?”. I responded with “no reason, don’t worry I’ll get some for you”. It was after that response that I looked at her and saw her eyes popping out.
I had to stop all that I was doing to process that my little sister who is about 3 years away from 18 years was asking me for a condom and there I was telling her I would get some for her. When she realized I had grasped onto whatever she was asking, she ran away and of course, I went after her. I was so interested to know what she wanted to use the condom for. Now, put on your seat belt because it’s about to be a roller coaster.
She just wrote her Basic Education Certificate Examination in July and awaiting her results. According to what she told me, whiles she was in school, her friends told her that condoms clear acne. I didn’t even let her finish her explanation at all. I just long pressed my power button and then asked Siri ”is it true that condoms clear acne?” We found a number of responses and to my surprise, one of them read that “Cambodian women have found a way to cure acne with condom lubricant”.
I really thought we were going to see negative responses so that my sister wouldn’t even be interested anymore but what we saw added fuel the fire. She looked happy after finding out whatever she thought was right. I just couldn’t stop looking at her. She opened up to me about a lot of things, in fact nasty things her colleagues have been discussing on their WhatsApp page about how to clear acne. I knew I had to step in.
Knowing her like the back of my palm, I had to quickly search for ”harmful effects of condom lubricant on the skin” and then show that to her as well. She looked disgusted when she saw the images from the search. I later explained to her that adolescence is just a phase and I went through it with even worse acne. I opened my front camera and asked her to look at the most prettiest girl I know. She smiled and hugged me.
After that whole big sister session was over, everything made sense to me because guess what guys? For some days now, this girl has been acting suspicious, going through my things all the time. I met her “folding” my clothes more than 4 times last week and there I was thinking my little sister was being sweet. Ah! Not knowing this girl was looking for a condom.
